BEST FIT AND FUNCTION HELMET ON THE MARKET I've been a Bell user since the 70's. I purchased the 500 to replace my 1985 Bell Magnum LTD..... which I loved... but my 60-year-old head deserved the latest technology. I also bought a second 500 for my wife.... need to protect her too. The 500 is a little 'bulkier' than my LTD - I am guessing there is more safety built into it.
I like how the 500 looks when riding my 70's BSA, Triumph, and Norton... Custom 500 Helmet - Size issue I like the helmet very much, I believe is value for money. The only problem was the size, I took considered all measures before making the purchase and still it came very small. I ordered a M and seems to be an S. Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem. Anyway, I returned it and will get another one asap. Sizes are not consistent. I had ordered a medium 500 in matte black and the fit is perfect. I ordered a white helmet for my wife because she liked mine but the medium was way smaller than the one I received. We both felt pressure points on the left and right sides especially around the ears. The cushioning material was a lot thicker and the stitching was not the same as the one I received. Going to try a large and hope it isn't on the opposite end of the spectrum and to big. I just wanted another 3/4 to ride around short distances and work area.
The helmet is MASSIVE. Super large even a XS is entirely too big. But it serves it's purpose, comfortable, and light. Nice old school helmet Was glad to find this helmet, did not care for the new styles... Nice, it doesn't ride high nor does it give you the bubble-head look. Seemed tight at first but within an hour, a perfect fit. Fits great, lightweight, looks good. I have a Bell Custom 500 and a Biltwell Bonanza. Compared to the cheaper Biltwell, the Bell helmet is more form-fitted. It has a more oval shape and the low profile places the shell snuggly around my skull. I normally fit between a medium and a large. I got the medium and it fits tight, but I can still wear my glasses. I like it because it does not look like a big, round astronaut helmet. The snug fit also provides better protection. The chin strap could be better padded, but on the plus side, it has a release tab that makes it easier to remove the helmet. This helmet provides features and benefits that justify the higher cost.
This helmet is pretty cheaply made (for a Bell) but I guess that's to be expected at this price point. I happen to fall on the tight side of a medium. Went riding when it was fairly warm and returned to find leather color stain had transferred to my forehead. I thought is was a result of the high temperature and sweat but it did it again when the temp was quite a bit lower. I'm disappointed with the quality and the fit. We bought two helmets; one for my wife and one for me. My wife's was a bit snug but we were able to compress the inner front padding so that it fits properly. We got the short face shields for them and they work great in the rain; they don't fog up. The helmet does not have any ventilation so it can get hot on days above 85 degrees. For the money this helmet is a good buy! Bell Custom 500 Helmet This is a nice helmet. Fits great and looks good. The chin strap is a bit tricky- you have to make sure both tabs are clear because you have to slide the strap through by feel.
