We have never traveled to this area of the U.S. but have heard it is beautiful. Would appreciate any advice. 2 destinations mentioned in this post Can't tell you much about Kentucky, but the Smoky Mountains are a great scenic area to ride bikes. Many bikers like to ride the "Tail of the Dragon" over near the NC border: Really, though, any of the roads in the national park are pretty scenic, espeically Hwy 441/Newfound Gap Road.
If you don't mind a slower pace, visit and ride the Cades Cove Loop Road, the Roaring Fork Motor Trail, or even take a ride over to Cataloochee to see the elk. The Smokies is a beautiful place to ride. We have been going there 4 years now by motorcycle. The Blue Ridge Parkway is also a great bike ride. We stay in the Maggie Valley- Cherokee North Carolina area. It is right on the Tn. NC border. The Cherohala skyway is another great ride. Really most of the roads there are great for riding. Corbin Kentucky is a great place to visit on the way there also. Cumberland Falls is right there and then I love to take 25 E and go through Cumberland gap tunnel. You will not be disappointed if you go to the Smokies I would highly suggest visiting the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area. I really enjoyed the area when I was there a couple of years ago. You can then stay on The Trace (Hwy 453) south and ends at Hwy 79 in Tennessee. Head east toward Dover/Clarksville. After about 1.3 miles, turn left at the Fort Donelson National Battlefield.
I suggest stopping at the Visitor Center, watch the movie, then get the brochure and do a self-guided driving tour. Even if no one in your group cares about Civil War history, just a ride through there to the river is awesome. I would suggest traveling thru the Lexington KY area...beautiful horse country......travel over and hit I-75 south and go down thru the Cumberland Gap area in KY then on down to the Great Smokies in TN. The eastern part of KY with its mountains are beautiful as well as TN. One destination mentioned in this post We have ridden in KY and TN, including the Smoky Mountains several times, and it's our favorite place for a motorcycle trip. The ride between Gatlinburg and Cherokee is awesome! Really, there's no bad ride in the Smoky Mountains! We also have ridden the entire Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive from Cherokee to PA, which was a wonderful experience if you're able to take time to go further east/north. The Otter's Peak Lodge on the Parkway was a great mid-way stopping point on the ride.
Tail of the Dragon in TN is a definite stop if you're on the motorcycle, just to say you did it. If you're not comfortable riding 312 curves in 11 miles, then just stop at the store at the beginning of the ride and pick up a souvenir t shirt! We have ridden several times in the Smoky Mountains and have enjoyed every time. ) I would recommend doing it during the week. The weekend is usually very crowded and you may have some less experienced riders. I don't recommend Cades Cove on the bike because of all of the stop and go traffic. If you have an air cooled bike it will be difficult to keep it from overheating. The stretch between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg can also be hard on the bike with the stop and go traffic. I have also ridden in Kentucky but usually just to get somewhere else.
