Prompted in part by the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Dirt Bowl started in 1969 when an all-state basketball player named Ben Watkins met up with a cheerleader named Janis Carter and the two brainstormed ways to to help unify the community and provide structure for the youth of West Louisville. It didn’t take long for the tournament to become the cultural powerhouse that it is today, which draws thousands of spectators to Shawnee Park every year with local food, live music, and the chance to hear Cornell Bradley’s iconic I said Bang!
