When you leave the grapevines of the Awatere Valley at the top of the South Island behind you soon get to traverse two high country sheep stations of almost mythical stature – Muller and Molesworth. The unsealed, lowly-maintained road climbs nearer the snowline, the light takes on an arc-welder intensity, and the shadow-play of the ridges and gullies of the Inland Kaikoura mountains would inspire late Kiwi painters like Colin McCahon and Don Binney to new heights if still alive.
It doesn't take too much of a stretch to imagine that this stunningly parched landscape resembles the Atlas mountains in Morocco, and such a fantasy would fully fit the bike I'm riding here – Honda's new CRF1000L Africa Twin. New Africa Twin comes in three models: we rode 'em all. The Africa Twin name hasn't been applied to a Honda motorcycle for several decades, and the new parallel twin-powered ADV is, finally, a worthy baton-carrier for the historical legacy of Honda's successful Paris-Dakar Rally forays in the 1980s, when they fully plundered Yamaha's and Ducati-powered Cagiva's thunder.READ MORE: Honda VFR800X Crossrunner sharpened Engine is 1000cc: ideal middle ground in the ADV genre. The first road-registrable Africa Twins to be spun off that success were a pair of rather mild 650cc and 750cc V-twins that soon found favour with two-wheeled trundlers through the Third World. The new CRF1000L is light years better than those wheezing old nails and fully takes advantage of three decades of further technical progress.
Two of the three-model range, including the mid-tier model I'm riding today have two ABS settings and four traction control settings fitted, and the top-of-the-range has a dual-clutch gearbox complete with off-road and on-road settings. The first auto ADV has arrived.Even without the option of a DCT gearbox, the Africa Twin would be different to any current big-block ADV as exemplified by the Yamaha XTZ1200 Tenere, BMW R1200GS, and KTM 1290 Adventure. Good fuel economy lets the Africa Twin roam for 400km between fills. For a start, it's a Honda, and therefore views the adventure riding world via a slightly more simplistic yet still highly-innovative prism. Secondly, it's a 1000 when most ADVs are either 1200s or 800s, and therefore has an opportunity to pack more punch than a middleweight bike into a lighter-handling package than one of the big-hitters. Indeed, that's how the twin has felt so far as I engage in a little exercise in speed-management to ensure that my riding partner, Jock McLauchlan, gets to open and shut all the gates over the Molesworth road.
If I can get a bit of a head start while Jock is occupied with closing a gate, that usually means that he gets to overtake me just as we approach the next one.For about 50km the ISDT veteran provides great service, but finally he gets so far ahead of me that he's closed the next gate before I can reach it. That we managed to break away from the rest of the eight-bike group is mostly serendipitous, but it's liberating to enjoy a dust-free passage through the Molesworth. Not that this enabled to me to identify a deep river ford in a straight section of the road. Approaching at a silly speed with the TC and ABS on their least intrusive settings, I nailed the front brake lever and felt it try to dig a furrow in the road for the 21" front wheel to follow. With the Africa Twin you can defeat the ABS on the rear brake, but not the front, and it's a set-up that suits a rider with a more modest loose-surface skillset than Jock's. I managed to wash off about 35kmh in the approach to the ford but still hit it about 25kmh faster than I would have liked to have.
I braced for the shock and locked my knees against the commendably slim tank/rider interface of the Africa Twin. Yet the bike just soaked up everything in its stride, and tracked through the stream in an arrow-like trajectory. With more than 200mm of well-set-up wheel travel at both ends of the bike, the Honda has everything it needs to fit the 'go anywhere' ethos adopted by its developers. That includes the one-off engine, which trades power for incredible tractability, yet still offers a bit more of the former than 800cc ADVs. Torque surfs through the drivetrain to the back wheel like Kelly Slater attacking a Pipeline barrel. You can easily dial in as much rear wheelspin as required with this smooth operator, or let the least-nervous TC setting help sort the skids out for you while still appearing to give you most of the credit for the bike control.Fuel economy is good enough to promote the Africa Twin as an everyday ride, and lets the bike roam for 400km on a full serving of the 18.8 litre tank capacity.
It's the details that make the AT one of the best ADV choices. I appreciated the simplicity of changing the TC and ABS settings, the wide range of seat heights on offer, the attention to weight-saving displayed by the lightweight brakes and wheel rims/hubs, and all the new trickery as evidenced by Honda's application for 32 new patents during the bike's development. There's too much that's unique for just one story on this bike, so consider this the first instalment of a three-part series, focusing on each of the three models. This TC/ABS 'manual' model costs $21,990, and is likely to be the most popular of the trio.Engine: 998cc liquid-cooled sohc 8-valve fuel-injected parallel-twin, 70kW (95bhp) at 7500rpm and 98Nm at 5750rpmTransmission: Six-speed sequential gearbox, chain final driveFrame: Steel perimeter frame and cast alloy rear swingarm; 45mm fully-adjustable front forks with 230mm of wheel travel, fully adjustable rear monoshock with handwheel for spring preload changes and 220mm of travel.
