The Pilot Power 3 Scooter is described by Tommy Maussin as being “more for fun,” a sporty tyre aimed at those who ride between 5,000 and 10,000 kilometres a year. The emphasis is upon dry weather use, and while the Pilot Power 3 Scooter also employs Michelin’s 2CT its tread is divided into three zones – central, medium and shoulder. The tread pattern has been optimised to managing braking stresses at the front and acceleration stresses at the rear.
At a lean angle of 30 degrees, specific sipes ensure grip in the wet while the shoulders are smooth to provide excellent grip at high angles of lean on dry roads. As previously mentioned, both tyres cater to a growing market segment. According to Maussin, European demand for radial scooter tyres has grown at an average rate of ten per cent per annum since 2007. Michelin currently sells around 135,000 scooter tyres a year in Europe. “That’s a lot when you consider that when Yamaha first introduced the TMAX in 2001, the European market for maxi scooter tyres was zero,” he adds. “European sales of the TMAX now lie somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 units a year, and numerous other manufacturers are also selling similar products here.” A first quarter 2016 launch is scheduled for both the Pilot Road 4 Scooter and Pilot Power 3 Scooter.
