If you’re in search of the wealthiest neighborhood in the United States, Atherton, CA definitely tops the list. Atherton is home to about 7,200 people, many of whom are famous or wealthy through the tech industry. This five-square-mile town has boasted such names over the years as Willie Mays and Jerry Rice from major-league sports, the late actress Shirley Temple Black, and tech executives from many Silicon Valley companies. In the late 19th century, Atherton was known as Fair Oaks, a flag stop for business people with summer residences and large estates north of Menlo Park. In a rush to incorporate before annexation, Fair Oaks officials discovered they couldn’t use the town’s name, as there was already another Fair Oaks near Sacramento. They incorporated as Atherton, after Faxon Atherton, one of the earlier settlers of the 1860s. The town of Atherton today is thickly wooded, sparsely populated, and as nature oriented as possible. Most of Atherton’s homes are large estates, just like the Fair Oaks days.
