Established in 1971 by founder and former trials rider Alan Clews, CCM Motorcycles has led the way in British motorcycle manufacturing ever since. 2014 sees the culmination of five years of development and research with the launch of the company’s new GP450 Adventure bike, thanks to funding from the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS). Recognising a gap in the market for a lightweight adventure bike that could handle both off road terrain and long distances on road, CCM has been working on developing a product that would do both. The GP450 was designed in-house using CAD facilities and MAS was able to fund the tooling needed to manufacture the foam seat, the seat mould, the vanity case and the windscreen. CCM, based in Bolton, predict that this new model, which marks its entry into the world’s fastest growing adventure sport and retails at £7,995, will boost revenues by £7m over the next three years. CCM will also be looking to build on its global reputation to generate significant export figures to the USA, Canada, Australia, Dubai, South Africa and 15 other countries.

The GP450 is the latest in a long line of groundbreaking bikes manufactured by CCM Motorcycles that supplied Eddie Kidd with his motorbike to jump over 13 double decker buses in 1976. CCM has long been at the forefront of cutting edge technology that has led to this first production motorcycle using a Bond-Lite aluminium chassis. Throughout its 40-year history, the company's own racing team has used the race track as a test bed for research and development and the GP450 has already proved a successful technical concept at Motocross Championship level and in media trials. Alan Clews said: “The GP450 Adventure is the result of five years hard work and investment and we drew on all of our racing and manufacturing experience to design and manufacture this bike. We knew the kind of bike we wanted to bring to market but the design was just the beginning. We then had to buy new tooling – which MAS enabled us to do – and to then put our prototypes to the test in Motocross, the world’s toughest motorsport.
