Smith Auctions Bid Board ClosesCrossroads Harley-Davidson in Center Valley is shutting its doors at the end of the month, joining a long list of Harley dealerships that have closed in recent years amid declining sales. The dealership at 5118 Route 309, which opened in 1995, will close on Oct. 28, according to a worker who answered the phone Monday. The dealership's owner did not respond to numerous phone calls seeking comment.

The impending closing will leave Lehigh and Northampton counties without a close Harley dealership. Those still open in the region include dealerships in Parryville, Carbon County, Sellersville, Bucks County and Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County. The Schoch Harley-Davidson in Stroudsburg was listed for sale this summer, according to published reports. Crossroads will join a series of Harley-Davidson dealerships to shutter in recent years, in-part as the brand contracts to weather the lackluster economy. In the last two years, Harley has shuttered at least 64 locations throughout the nation, which put the number of Harley dealerships at about 650, its number in 2002, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported in January. Some closings were necessary to protect the overall health of the dealer network, Harley officials told the publication. Officials at Harley-Davidson headquarters in Milwaukee did not respond to several phone calls seeking comment. Harley-Davidson has reported steady profit declines in recent years.

In July, the company reported its first sign of a turnaround as its second-quarter earnings rose 37 percent to $190.6 million. The motorcycle-maker reported new Harley-Davidson motorcycle sales grew 7.5 percent. As a response, the company raised its shipment forecast for 2011, expecting to ship as many as 235,000, up as much as 12 percent compared to a year ago. But overall the motorcycle industry has been in a downward spiral as the Great Recession continues to be a drag on consumer wallets, and financing qualifications remain tight. Overall, the motorcycle industry sold an estimated 551,000 new bikes in 2010, down from 1.1 million in 2008 and 655,000 in 2009, according to California-based Motorcycle Industry Council, a trade group that includes members in manufacturers and distributors. Ty van Hooydonk, a spokesman for the group, said the industry is affected by the economy, not a decline in the number of riders. The group reported that second-quarter bike sales were up roughly 3 percent compared to a year ago.
