Submaker owner dead in motorcycle crashRelatives recall restaurateur who lived life with gusto SAND LAKE — A West Sand Lake motorcyclist who operated The Submaker restaurant is dead after a crash on state Route 43, State Police said. The victim of the Tuesday crash was Joe Rezey, 60, who ran the Menands restaurant for 30 years. "He was bigger than life. He knew everybody," said David Rezey, his son. An avid motorcyclist the elder Rezey, was going to meet his wife at a party at JJ's Cycle in Watervliet, David Razy said. The motorcyclist was traveling west on Route 43 around 4:30 p.m. when his Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a Subaru Forester collided. The Subaru was entering Route 43 from the Rite Aid parking lot, police said. Rezey was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital where he died. He leaves behind his wife, Brenda, who growing up was the neighbor girl from three or four houses down the street, David Rezey said.
In addition to David, his middle child, Rezey leaves behind a daughter, Laura, 33; and younger son, Joel, 25, who all worked at the Submaker with their father. His niece, Danielle Furfaro recalled her uncle as a drummer who collected motorcycles, cars and cigars. "In a family of cool, wild people, my mom's youngest brother was the coolest and the wildest," Furfaro said. "He was an early example of how to not conform and how to live life on one's own terms." Despite a cancer diagnosis more than a decade ago, he never stopped riding his motorcycle, Furfaro said. The family has arranged memorial services at Parker Bros.
