A cycling advocacy group in Halifax is looking to convince the provincial government to drop the mandatory bicycle helmet law. Members of the Halifax Cycling Coalition voted this week to make repealing Nova Scotia’s helmet requirement one of the group’s priorities in the new year. “The board has in the past talked about the helmet law but never taken a formal position,” said HCC co-chair Ben Wedge in an interview Wednesday. “It’s safe to say there’s (now) openness there to start working on this.” HCC co-founder Doug Denny proposed the idea at Tuesday night's meeting, arguing that helmet requirements keep people off bicycles without making them any safer. “What really keeps people safe on bikes is numbers of cyclists,” said Denny. “(But) when you have people in helmets it increases the perceived risk of cycling and people choose not to do it.” According to research cited by Wedge, when the Nova Scotia helmet law was introduced in 1997 it cut the cycling rate in half but only reduced the number of bike-related head injuries by one third.

“That means the rate of head injuries per kilometre cycled actually increased,” said Wedge. “Helmets are proven to protect people from brain injury and the majority of research confirms this,” said Halifax Regional Police Department spokeswoman Lauren Leal. “Even if (the HCC) were successful in having this law abolished we would still encourage people to ride safely.” And that involves wearing a helmet, she added. The current fine in Nova Scotia for cycling without a helmet is $143.27. Adam Cahill took off his motorcycle helmet on Saturday afternoon, sat on his patio and drank a beer, trying to calm his nerves after his second near-miss with a moose in a week. Following the first close call near Appleton, Nfld., Cahill decided to never again leave the house without his trusty helmet camera.

And it was that camera that captured the Gander man's excited shrieks over the weekend as he edged out yet another moose by mere feet while out for a ride. "It's pretty wild," Cahill told CBC News Monday. "I tell ya, I go out moose-hunting or anything like that and I won't see a frigging thing. I go out on motorcycle and I'll see two in a week." With a bit of luck and a masterful manoeuvre, he avoided both the moose and truck by the slimmest of margins. Just one second later, Cahill breaks out into excited laughter, screaming curse words at the top of his lungs.

It's been 48 hours, but Cahill still gets giddy when talking about his eventful ride around Gander on the weekend. Once the adrenaline burned off, he realized just how lucky he was. "Everything was at the right moment for me to miss it, that's for sure," he said. "[The motorcycle] was definitely what I needed to be on by that point. If I was in my jeep, I figure I woulda cracked him for sure." Soon after his close encounter, Cahill uploaded a video of the near-miss to Facebook. By Monday evening, it had racked up nearly 30,000 views and hundreds of shares. Cahill, who's a paramedic, said he'll be keeping his focus sharp from now on to avoid becoming a patient instead. "You definitely gotta keep your eyes open," he said. "I didn't expect to see any moose where I was. I didn't even have my coat on, or anything like that. I was just out in a hoodie, bombing around town ... They can come out of anywhere." Meanwhile, the video continues to rack up views and comments online — most of them directed at his comical reaction to the terrifying situation.

"I almost took the biggest bite out of a moose burger I ever ate," Cahill laughed. "I was definitely not thinking about my language, that's for sure." And when he decides to go hunting again, he just might bring his lucky — or unlucky — bike. "I'll have to put my rifle on my back in the fall."
