10 year-old Hamish was riding his motorbike with his brother and friends on the afternoon of ANZAC Day, Saturday April 25 He was rushed to hospital after crashing his motorbike into a barbed wire fence, which severed his throat His younger brothers alerted their father, Cameron Bolto, who quickly ran to his aid. ‘I remember I went up to him and I said, “Are you all right, mate?” And that is when I saw the injury to his neck,’ he told The West Australian.Mr Bolto said his son's throat was cut so badly that he could see the muscles inside, and that his trachea was gaping wide open.Seeing his son's eyes roll back in his head, Mr Bolto breathed about four times into the hole in his neck to ensure he was getting enough air.A team of local volunteer paramedics arrived shortly after 3.30pm that afternoon, and called for backup from the town's only paramedic when they saw the state Hamish was in. A team of critical care paramedics then inserted a tube into his trachea down the hole in his neck, before he was sedated and choppered to Perth's Princess Margaret Hospital with his father by his side.

He was met by more than 20 medical staff when he arrived at the emergency department around 8pm that night, who then stitched his trachea, oesophagus, vocal cords and throat muscles back together.But while Hamish was still in an induced coma, doctors explained to his parents that a complication left him with damage to his carotid artery, and a blood clot had formed inside.The blood clot broke loose two days later and moved into his brain, and Hamish suffered a stroke as a result.Ten days after further surgery, Hamish woke from his coma paralysed down his left side. Hamish's parents took turns sleeping by his side every night over the 101 days he was kept in hospital The small community have helped Hamish's parents through the ordeal by mowing the lawn and cleaning the house.
