New BMW Motorcycle Concept Bike Is Self-Balancing The self-balancing BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 concept motorcycle is unveiled on the last of four international stops of the 'Iconic Impulses' event, recognizing 100 years of BMW on Oct. 11 in Santa Monica, California. By Clyde Hughes   | Friday, 14 Oct 2016 09:03 AM A new BMW motorcycle concept bike is technologically advanced enough that it would be self-balancing and eliminates the need for a helmet because of its use of artificial intelligence. The BMW group introduced the concept motorcycle, the BMW Motorrad Vision Next 100, Tuesday in Santa Monica, California, Bloomberg reported. The unveiling was part of events the German company had been holding around the world showing off its new concepts. BMW claimed that its self-balancing system will keep the motorcycle upright whether standing still or in motion, while a "Digital Companion" would offer the rider tips and adjustment suggestions to improve their experience, Bloomberg noted.

A pair of glasses, called "The Visor," is controlled by eye movement and would give active feedback about road conditions while helping adjust the ride to the driver's riding style. The motorcycle stops short of being a self-driving vehicle, leaving the rider in control the motorcycle, TechCrunch noted. "With the Motorrad, the answer is less a path to full autonomy, as you might expect with four-wheeled cars, and instead represents a natural conclusion based on the aspects of motorcycle riding that people value," TechCrunch writer Darrell Etherington wrote. "That means the end-user experience is more about the freedom of the open road, with issues like safety handled by on-board artificial intelligence systems." USA Today wrote that BMW wanted to show how emerging technologies can be used to help the rider avoid potential accidents and hazards. "The world is rapidly changing. New solutions are needed," BMW board of management chairman Harald Krüger said, according to USA Today.

He added that BMW's goal with the concept was to "shape tomorrow's premium mobility" with new technology. Krüger called the United States the "second home to BMW," saying that its plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, "shows our commitment to the U.S. is real and long term," USA Today reported.
