The bike is a 1940s Soviet M72, and is an almost identical copy of the wartime BMW R71 which was used by the German forces in the early years of WW2. Rumour has it that the bikes blueprints were passed on to the Soviets by Germany as part of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact.

My plan is to transform the bike and sidecar in to a copy of a Wehrmacht outfit. As you can see from the photos, the bike is now almost completely stripped down and nearly ready for sand blasting prior to going to the paint shop to be sprayed Feldgrau. Before all that though I have a few jobs to do on the frame to make it more like an R71, including cosmetic and structural transformations. It's going to take a few months to complete the project and I will post updates as I move along. Edited by jagdpanther44, 26 May 2016 - 05:33 PM. Otto and von Poop like this Posted 21 March 2013 - 10:47 PM This should be good. It's only the Internet... Posted 21 March 2013 - 10:52 PM There's a lot of 'cracking' to do before it's finished! Posted 21 March 2013 - 11:08 PMJust wow...good luck mate. British Army 1939-1945 - World War II Tribute Video Posted 21 March 2013 - 11:18 PMI'm going to need all the luck I can get...especially when reassembling the thing!

Posted 22 March 2013 - 04:46 PM great project, I love the old BMW and Soviet copies of them from those years. Good luck to you John, hope the wallet isn't too thin? Posted 22 March 2013 - 06:08 PM Thanks, Clint, I guessed this sort of thing would appeal to you. The wallet is starting to lighten already and I've only just started! The only saving grace about the project is that spare parts are cheap and very easy to come by. Today I removed the piston barrels in readiness for new piston rings to be fitted. All looks well with the barrels with no visible scoring or other damage. Posted 22 March 2013 - 06:29 PM More power to ya. I'd be afraid of a project that old considering availability (or lack of ) parts. My current project is just 40yrs old and that's with parts available. I will be following this with great interest. Posted 22 March 2013 - 07:02 PM These bikes are as tough as nails and can take a lot of stick, the engines are easy to work on, and if I ever do get stuck (i.e 'where does this bolt go?') then I have workshop manuals that I've downloaded from the wonderful interweb to help me get back on track.

Posted 24 March 2013 - 11:32 AMI´m very interested in seeing the progress. Posted 25 March 2013 - 12:23 PM Posted 26 March 2013 - 09:17 PMWill the parts for the new ones fit yours? Rich A, in Pa. Posted 27 March 2013 - 01:04 PM Rich, fortunately the parts are all the same regardless of the bikes age. Last weekend (in sub zero temperatures!) I finished dismantling the bike and all is now done. I also did a little more on the engine and discovered that the piston rings are rather worn, so a new set are on order. Posted 27 March 2013 - 09:08 PM Lol do you have the MG 42 already? it is a must with the sidecar! And a not allowed to have by the police........ Posted 27 March 2013 - 10:39 PM That is nice to know. Indeed I have, Ulrich... Edited by jagdpanther44, 14 December 2014 - 11:30 AM. Posted 28 March 2013 - 11:51 PM Looking at pic three, I can't help thinking that's quite a good looking frame/plunger setup, FAR nicer than the rip-off "featherbed" style frame that BMW graduated to in the 1970s and 80s... Pity you're restoring it, would look FAR better with a little Sportster tank on it, a single seat, a 16" rear rim.... "Et Dick tracy, il est mort? Posted 29 March 2013 - 12:05 AM You do the classic Jerry motorcylist trench coat too with helmet...? I'd love one of them or an old British leather Jerkin.... Posted 29 March 2013 - 01:43 AMI didn't look at these posts before, but Wow! You've taken on quite a project. Keep us posted on your progress. Looks good so far. Posted 06 April 2013 - 02:55 PM gone the same way like you did but build a bimmer repop from the scratch - means i pulled the best parts out of a pile of junkparts and built up my R75 repop sidecar

to give her this special R75 look i was after i replaced the 19" rims with 16" like on the real bimmer looks much better to me with the more "beefy" rubbers don't wanna bust your thread but here are a couple of pics on with the 16 " and some bodyparts almost finished but still some small touch ups missing finally here she is - added some plaquettes and badges for the realistic look meanwhile i sent her to Germany where she currently waits for me to take her to Normandy in June this year looking forward to your updates and next steps Posted 06 April 2013 - 09:29 PM I have a few helmets to choose from and a Whermacht motorcyclists coat (Kradmantel) is on my want list. You are fortunate to be in China as parts are readily available there. What size tyres do you have on the bike? Posted 07 April 2013 - 02:44 AM i did what you said about that 16' rim ... same basis which i used for the wehrmacht rig Posted 07 April 2013 - 02:50 AM
