Meanwhile, authorities arrested the man who was operating the motorcycle, suspecting him of driving under the influence. The crash occurred two days after Walter Unger's youngest daughter, Nadya, had turned 23. On Thursday, she went on a motorcycle ride on a rural road with fellow Camarillo resident Garrett Vongunten, 26. As the motorcycle traveled south on Las Posas Road with Vongunten at the helm, they approached Fifth Street south of Camarillo about 6 p.m. Thursday. For reasons still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, the motorcycle did not stop, instead colliding with the side of a westbound commuter train.
Vongunten suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital, but Unger was pronounced dead at the scene. CHP officials said Friday they had no update on Vongunten's medical condition. However, they said he was suspected of being under the influence of drugs while operating the motorcycle and had been arrested in connection with felony DUI.Walter Unger was devastated by his daughter's death."She was the most beautiful person in the world," he said. She lived with him in Arizona for most of her life, but would come to stay with her mother in Camarillo every now and then, he said. When she was 21, she decided she wanted to move to Camarillo to start her own business, her father said. She owned Bark, Bath and Beyond on Verdugo Way, which according to its website offered full-service "pampering for dogs and cats."He said his daughter was an adventurer who went skydiving, rode dirt bikes and recently went on a trip to India. He remembered his youngest daughter as a happy, confident young woman."
She was my baby," he said. "I'm really going to miss her." Aspects of the crash were still under investigation Friday, including whether the crew on the Metrolink train knew something had hit the train and if so, why they didn't stop before arriving the train's next stop. Among the 20 passengers on the train Thursday evening was Ventura resident Staci Smith Johnson."I was in the back of the train and I didn't hear, feel, see a thing," Johnson said. "The conductor came over and told us that he thought we hit a guard pole and that we would check it out at the Oxnard station."Johnson said that within seconds of the conductor's announcement, another passenger ran up and told him that it was not a guard pole. Instead, the passenger said she had seen a motorcycle hit the train."She was in the second car and she was looking out the window when she saw the motorcycle coming," Johnson said. "She said they were going full speed. Johnson said that upon arrival at the Oxnard station, the conductor inspected the train and reportedly saw blood and motorcycle parts on its exterior.
Then the passengers were told that they would have to find other means of transportation to Ventura, the train's destination."A lot of people were surprised that the train didn't stop once it was hit, but we didn't know. You hear noise all the time when riding the train," Johnson said. "If it wasn't for the woman who was looking out the window, we probably would've kept going all the way to Ventura."Thursday's fatal crash was at least the third at that railroad crossing in just over two years.A 23-year-old Camarillo man, Brian Kuczynski, died after his car collided with an Amtrak train on Nov. 21.The crossing arm was down and the lights were flashing at the time of the collision, according to authorities. Kuczynski's car hit the crossing arm and was thrown 171 feet. On April 23, 2015, a 57-year-old Rialto man, Timothy Newhouse, was killed when his sport utility vehicle hit the front side of a Union Pacific train. CHP video showed the crossing arms were working properly at the time of the crash.
Misty Jill Wood, 77, of Ojai, was killed Dec. 30, 2013, when her minivan hit an Amtrak train.Darren Kettle, executive director of the Ventura County Transportation Commission, said Friday: "I don't know that it's necessarily an out-of-the-ordinary railroad crossing. But street crossings that are at grade with railroads aren't as safe as when there is a bridge over them. And in our county, we have plenty of those."The commission voted Friday to try to place a half-cent transportation sales tax measure on the county's November ballot. Revenues from such a measure could help fund such bridges, Kettle said.A bridge is already in the planning stages at Rice Avenue and Fifth Street in Oxnard, the site of another fatal crash last year.In February, Rep. Julia Brownley, D-Westlake Village, announced a $1.5 million Federal Railroad Administration grant to help build a bridge over the Rice Avenue crossing. The $45 million bridge would lift Rice Avenue over the railroad tracks at Fifth Street, separating rail and street traffic.
