Since 1982, Delta College has sponsored a Motorcycle Safety program with the Michigan Department of State. Beginning in 2016, Delta College adopted the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s new curriculum for the Basic Rider Course and offered both the Basic Rider and eCourse Basic Rider as well as Returning Rider.
With the introduction of its online eCourse, this updated Motorcycle Safety curriculum takes a more interactive approach to education by allowing you to take a segment of your classroom learning right in the comfort of your own home. By covering key components of the motorcycle’s basic operation prior to class (for example, motorcycle controls, riding strategies, etcetera) you will arrive to class ready for your hands-on training. For those who would prefer a complete in-classroom learning experience, we will still offer the traditional Basic Rider classes that do not require the online eCourse. All Motorcycle Safety courses are non-transferable and non-refundable. Failure to bring any of these materials will prohibit you from participating in class. Delta College acknowledges that the State of Michigan's motorcycle helmet law, but it is still a requirement to wear a D.O.T. approved helmet while participating in any Motorcycle Safety Foundation course. Due to the high demand for this program, Delta College LifeLong Learning makes every effort to fill open seats.
Registered students must arrive on time or risk losing their seat to stand-by candidates. Delta College offers three types of Motorcycle Safety courses. Please visit the links below for dates and registration information for each course. Motorcycle Safety Basic Rider The Basic Rider course is required for anyone who wishes to obtain a motorcycle endorsement. This course is designed for riders with little or no riding experience, but who wish to become familiar with motorcycle rules and regulations, and develop skills to become confident riders. Motorcycle Safety Basic Rider eCourse This class consists of approximately 20 hours of instruction – 4 hours of online preparation to be completed prior to your class start date, 5 hours of classroom instruction, and 11 hours of hands-on training. Designed for someone who has minimal experience operating a motorcycle, this course focuses on the development of basic riding skills: clutch and throttle coordination, straight-line riding, braking, turning, and shifting.
