She laced up her leather work-boots, slid her custom-painted black-and-white striped helmet over her blonde pixie, and hopped on her motorcycle for a sunrise cruise with two friends. One was a fellow motorcyclist and the other, a small white terrier named Kodiak, who goes everywhere with Joy, and whose wiry-haired head — Doggles wrapped around his eyes — peeked out from the front of Joy’s leather jacket. The trio was in the desert for the annual Babes Ride Out campout, an event that attracts women riders from around the world for a weekend of epic riding, bonding and of course, a dose of the desert’s beauty. When they ride in on a Friday and out on a Sunday, atop Sportsters, Triumphs, vintage Hondas and old choppers, dressed in denim, leather, and helmets that sparkle and shine, the several hundred “Babes” of Babes Ride Out turn the Joshua Tree campground and surrounding landscape into a cosmic braaping solar system of positive vibes.“Ladies are coming out of the woodwork,” says Babes Ride Out co-founder and Harley Sportster rider Ashmore Ellis.
She and fellow co-founder Anya Violet are awed by the event’s rapid expansion. In 2013 the pair conceived a humble campout for 15 to 20 gals in Borrego Springs. To their surprise, 50 women rolled up. The following year they moved the event to Joshua Tree, which drew 500. And later this month (Oct. 23-25), some 900 Babes are expected to travel from as far as the United Kingdom, Asia and Australia, many of them renting bikes."We live by two rules," says Babes Ride Out co-founder Ashmore Ellis. "'Helmets on' and 'no 'tudes, no dudes.'" “It’s an interesting type of woman,” says Leslie Padoll, a New Yorker who took the journey on a purple softail Harley-Davidson two autumns ago. “There’s something awesome about being with a bunch of other people that just get it — we have that crazy, wild and adventurous free spirit.”This sisterhood has grown strong and fast in two years thanks to social media and a simple code of rules: “Helmets on” and “No ’tudes, no dudes.” For many female motorcycle riders in the United States and beyond who spend a lot of time around men, this rally is the weekend of the year: a golden opportunity to ride with other females, make friends from afar, and meet faces they’ve only seen online.
Joshua Tree’s unusual scenery —which has earned it a place on many bucket lists — provides an out-of-this-world backdrop.“Most of the riders come from places that don’t have this amazing desert landscape,” says Anya, who grew up riding dirt bikes in the Mojave. The rider of a Triumph Bonneville and an avid stargazer, Anya invited the Southern California Desert Video Astronomers to introduce attendees to the area’s phenomenal night sky this year. “An astronomy show isn’t the most common thing to see at a biker campout,” she says. “But we try to make our event special and provide a true Joshua Tree experience.” When it’s all Babes, the pressure’s off. “There’s no judgment,” says rider Katy Zales, who operates a moto apparel business called Shoppe 815 in Los Angeles and rides a vintage Harley-Davidson she rebuilt with her husband. Katy says the good-naturedness of the event’s founders trickles down. “If you don’t know how to set up your tent, or if you drop your bike, these women are there to help you pick it up — whereas when you’re the only girl riding with a bunch of guys, you don’t want to be that girl who drops her bike.”
She says Ashmore and Anya’s positive and energetic vibes set the tone for the campout from the outset. “Last year, they were standing at the entrance waving and cheering, and they were so excited,” Katy recalls. “You just want to stop your bike right there and jump off and [join them] instead of even parking it.”SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING LEATHER PANTSBabes Ride Out is about strangers becoming quick pals, and most attendees leave having made dozens of new friendships. “It’s [about more than] riding motorcycles, it’s about making new friends,” Leslie says. Thanks to social media platforms like Instagram, most women attend the event already knowing the names of other riders, and have a list of those they admire. “I don’t think I would necessarily approach people I admire at an event where there are men and women.”Ashmore credits social media for creating such a stir around the event and for bringing so many Babes together. “In June of 2013, Anya and I were chatting about how we wanted to go camping and riding together.
We picked a weekend and invited some other ladies to ride out.” Fifty joiners and one campout later, the Babes started a blog to see if they could draw more attendees. Once social media got ahold of it, it spread like “wildfire.” Anya adds: “It’s rad to see people connect through social media and then meet for the first time and ride together at one of our events.” They agreed to let @babesrideout and #babesrideout grow organically. The stunning desert scenery in the photos didn’t hurt.FOR THE LOVE OF THE ROADLast fall, most women caught a last minute of sleep before golden light swept over their tents. They had made it here, thanks to a secret email address sent out two days before. As Joy and Kodiak returned from their bonus ride, just a few minutes late, they passed a hundred other girls on their way to Idyllwild for the 9 a.m. group ride.“Anya and Ashmore were right in front, waving at us to turn around,” says Joy. “We rode the whole line down and then jumped in the line with everyone.
There’s something about riding in a big group that’s such a good time because it’s not something you do super often. There’s definitely a rush that comes along with it.”This month, instead of an all-Babes ride, smaller choose-your-own-adventure rides will be offered for different engine sizes and riding abilities — and everyone is expected to get out of the campsite and ride. Destinations include Joshua Tree National Park, the Integratron and Pappy and Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace. In addition to highways and stargazing, the campout includes a bonfire, concerts by girl-fronted bands Dorothy and L.A. Witch, and a raffle to win riding gear from such sponsors as Biltwell and Stance Socks. Babes Ride Out has inspired many women to get their M1 license — a feat, Joy says, because as a female rider, it’s easy to feel like an outsider. “Before [Babes], I could never find other girls to ride with,” she continues. “People would say, ‘Why do you ride a motorcycle?’ and I’d reply, ‘Well, why the hell not?’
I’ve always wanted to be the one going fast.’” Joy thinks the friendly environment the Babes event offers is a welcoming sight for beginners.Harley Sportster rider Kristen Reynolds was new to the pastime when she attended last year. This month, she’ll be back as a devotee, her bike running. “Attending Babes Ride Out won’t make me a better rider or give me more experience on the road,” Kristen says. “I have to do that for myself. But having this event to look forward to, and having this community built around it, has sped up my learning curve exponentially.”Joy recalls feeling the same way in her early days of riding: “My favorite stories are the ones that remind me of what it was like when I first got on a moto and tried to ride it — sort of humbles you.”The aim of Babes Ride Out, Anya says, is not to convince new riders but to encourage them. “Riding may look cool, but it is an extremely dangerous thing to do and I’m confident that the majority of women that ride with us  are aware of that.”
