But after a long day at the beach, when the moon pokes through the sky and the stars begins to shine, folks hit the drag strip. With cool, clear nights along the beach, Hawaii sounds like paradise for a drag racer. And it just may be. Even though haoles may tend to think the 50th state of the union is all surf and McTeryakiburgers, you may be surprised to learn that the Hawaiian islands are home to three quarter-mile tracks plus an eighth-mile sand track. Kauai Raceway Park in particular is the model for perfection when it comes to how community involvement can ensure the longevity of motorsports.
Photo courtesy of Garden Isle Racing Association. The land on which Kauai Raceway Park sits originally was part of the Pacific Missle Range Facility, which was then left vacant until the development of a multi-purpose motorsports facility in the 1960s. Due to a lack of funds, the development ceased after the completion of the dragstrip in 1970.Kauai Raceway Park hasn’t been repaved since 1972, so four years ago several members of the non-profit Garden Isle Racing Association, Inc. (the group that leases the state-owned property and operates the track) approached local state representatives about obtaining funding for repaving. The reps were invited to visit the track and observe the work needed to repave the track, not to mention check out the scene and the enthusiasm of the public (read: voters).Unfortunately, this was several years ago when the global recession was in full force, but eventually the sun broke through the haze and tourism picked up, helping make the rejuvenation more of a reality.
Governor Neil Abercrombie even lent his support, so by mid-2012 funding had been approved.Once consultants and engineers examined what was needed, it was determined what Kauai Raceway Park really needed was a major reconstruction. What this entailed was the replacement of the 60-foot concrete launch pad, 300 feet or reinforced concrete for both the launch pad and burnout area, repaving about 1/2-mile of asphalt, and a new timing system.best bikes in 110cc in indiaWhat’s most remarkable about the whole process is the lack of opposition by the neighboring public and the support by the government agencies. motorcycles for sale in kzn gumtreeHow many times have we heard about local governments putting up a fight against drag strips? black cordura motorcycle jacket
Yet here we have the Garden Isle Racing Association operating a track that engenders comradery and safety within the community all the while fostering longevity through their Jr. Dragster program. With scholarship awards, campaigns focusing on safe driving on the strip instead of racing on the highways, and the general understanding that racing in a controlled environment is safer for everyone, it was a win-win for everyone. motorcycle shop in vacavilleLook for Kauai Raceway Park to be ready for some rubber in March, 2014.motorcycles for sale delray beach The mission of the Tradewind Cyclingpennsylvania motorcycle helmet law statistics Team is to promote competitive bicycle racing
