As Xavier Chan and Ikenna Ofoha built their first prototypes, they were written up by Wired magazine last September in a story with the headline: "Electric bicycles sure look dopey.
But not this beauty." The story, which noted that several companies are drawing on "some of the coolest motorcycles of the past to build something new yet retro," was the validation the 20-year-olds needed as they worked long hours and spent all their money on the idea that people will pay thousands of dollars for an e-bike if it has a beautiful and unique design. The fledgling business, Tempus Electric Bikes, operates out of their apartment in Guelph. They have been building prototypes in the small space. "It was crazy spray-painting it in our living room," Chan says. Friends since they started attending St. Augustine Catholic High School in Markham years ago, Chan and Ofoha are building the business from the ground up. "We have just been putting in every dollar we make from working into the development of the bike," Chan says. "It's like rounding up every dollar we can." After borrowing from family and friends, and securing a grant with their admission into The Hub, a startup program at the University of Guelph, Chan and Ikenna have persevered and are nearing completion of their third prototype.
It looks like a motorcycle. Their mission is declared on the Tempus website — "we wanted to build an e-bike that looked cool."cheap motorbikes for sale in bolton Chan believes most bicycles look pretty much the same. vespa for sale devonHe says the same is true for e-bikes.motorcycle repair shops in naples fl "We really have a passion for something that stops you in your tracks," Chan says. top speed games uphill rush 2"Compared to a regular bike, when we ride this around people stop and do a double take and ask: 'What did I just see?'" Chan and Ofoha first talked about starting their own business on the bus rides to and from high school.
In Grade 10, Ofoha built his first electric bike. After graduating from high school, he went to Ryerson University to study software engineering. Chan went to the University of Guelph for finance and economics. The pair started Tempus last year. Ofoha left Ryerson and Chan plans to graduate from Guelph in 2018. They finished their first working prototype last April. It is inspired by the look of a lightweight motorcycle known as a café racer. They call their bike the CR-T1 — short for Café Racer Tempus One. With a frame built out of aircraft grade chromoly steel made in Ontario, and powered by a removable lithium-ion battery, the CR-T1 can travel 50 kilometres on a single charge, and tops out at speed of 50 km/h. The battery is attached to the frame. The electronics are housed inside a casing mounted where the gas tank would be on a motorcycle. The motor is in the rear wheel hub. Chan and Ofoha changed the design and some of the electronics for the second prototype that was completed last May.
They are working on the third prototype, which they say will be lighter. They expect it to be ready for test rides in mid-February. By the time the fourth prototype is completed in March, Tempus plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign to pay for the first production run. "Aside from the two of us always wanting to start our own company, what we really want to do is just, honestly, build cool stuff," Chan says. The company is accepting preorders now with a deposit of $599. Payment of the remaining $3,400 is due 90 days before the bike is shipped. "We are pretty all in on this now," Chan says.
