This event has passed. Edmonton Motorcycle Swap Meet The spring version of this social event with tons of vendors and some great deals!Nestled in the Alberta foothills a half hour’s drive southwest of Calgary is the Millarville Racetrack. It might be best known for its popular weekend Millarville Farmers’ Market, held every Saturday from mid-June to early October. Others would recognize the facilities in many of the scenes involving horses on CBC’s award-winning Heartland television series. But for those who appreciate motorcycles, it’s home to the Millarville Vintage Motorcycle Swap Meet. Hosted by the Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group’s Rocky Mountain Section out of Calgary, this group is recognizing its 20th anniversary this year. “It’s like a garage sale for motorcycle parts,” says swap meet organizer Janice Whitby, in her second year in the job after taking over from Bobby Baum. “But it’s not just greasy, dirty and rusty motorcycle parts – it’s so much more than that.
“There are vendors selling memorabilia, and others with riding equipment such as jackets, helmets and gloves. There are tools, magazines and manuals, photos and toys. It’s a great event.” Sunday, September 11 marks the Rocky Mountain Section’s 14th annual swap meet. In 2003, the vintage motorcycle group’s first event was held in the small Inglewood Community Association Hall in Calgary. There were a handful of vendors who had cleaned off shelves in their sheds and garages, offering the parts to those searching for bits and pieces to either complete a project, or provide inspiration for something new. The meets were held at the hall for three years before the group pulled up stakes and headed out of town to the Millarville Racetrack. “The event is grassroots, and for lack of a better description, it’s rustic and quaint,” Whitby explains. “The riding arena has a dirt floor, and it’s not a big, stale facility. It’s a barn with a lot of character. “The facility and the location, I think, bring people out on a destination ride, or a drive.
It’s a great excuse to head out of the city for half a day.” Word about the swap meet has spread, and the event has continued to grow; it’s become something of a meeting ground for motorcycle enthusiasts across western Canada. Independent collectors with small fleets of vintage motorcycles to new hobbyists with just one machine often attend. Whitby says vendors are also coming from across western Canada to set up at Millarville. She has registrations from B.C., around Alberta and some from Saskatchewan. Over the years, a broad range of parts and complete motorcycles have turned up for sale. Makes such as Ariel, B.S.A., Bultaco, Harley-Davidson, Hodaka, Honda, Indian, Kawasaki, Matchless, Norton, Royal Enfield, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha– to name a few – have been offered. Whitby can’t know what will show up in the back of trucks or on trailers from year to year, and says that all adds to the excitement of attending. “You won’t know if you don’t go,” she says, and continues, “Our meet has a great reputation for having a variety of products, and it definitely doesn’t cater to a single specific brand.”
For those just getting started in the motorcycle hobby, the meet is also a great one-stop place to get information from some of the finest restorers and bike builders. Ask questions and someone will help provide the best source for answers. The swap meet takes place at the Millarville Racetrack, 306097 192 St. W. Millarville, Alberta (about 30 min. southwest of Calgary off Highway 549, visit cvmg-rms.ca and click on Swap Meet Info to find a map, or find a map and posters on Facebook by searching for CVMG Millarville Vintage Motorcycle Swap Meet). Doors are open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with $5 general admission. Vendors welcome, $25/table pre-booked and prepaid, $35 at the door. “It’s a fourteen year tradition,” Whitby says of the swap meet. “It’s successful thanks to a small army of volunteers, and we plan to keep it going for years to come with very few changes.” Greg Williams is a member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).
