Motorcycling in Maui in this April and wondering what is the best bike for local roads? I noticed Island Riders offers a big BMW K1300 and also a Buell and a Ducati Monster in addition to the Harley line up. I'm curious how smooth, fast, & busy the roads are in Maui to help figure out what's the best bike to choose? Our roads are certainly not fast. Plus so many drivers are visitors and they break suddenly and unexpectly. Send Harleynut a private message...just put "harleynut" into the search feature above...He'll give you the low-down on riding on Maui. I answered you a few days ago in your identical thread. Those Vespa scooters look about the right speed for Maui :) Was there EVER a choice??? All the other options you mentioned are nice bikes, but you'll run out of road by 2nd gear. A no-helmet cruise on Maui (especially the Hana Highway) on a glopatta-glopatta machine is the best fun you can have with your pants on! Doing those areas (600 hairpin corners) on a sports bike might sound great, but the reality is that you won't be doing any peg scraping on Maui.

The place is so beautiful, that you'll just want to take it all in with a steady cruise with your eyes up and not just be focused on the 10mm pebble in the apex of the corner. Leave the Monster and the Buell to the weekend warriors tackling Dragons Tail. I've owned enduro, vintage, sports, trials, chopped & tourers, so I'm not a Harley drone, but the Harley cruiser style just suits the location. The rumbling exhaust note, the engine vibration and the riding position complement the temperature, road conditions and magnificent scenery unfolding in front of you will give you so much chicken-skin, you'll resemble 80 grit sandpaper. The last visit, it absolutely bucketed down on us and did put a bit of a downer on the Road to Hana, but I think it was more that we'd taken along another couple to give them the experience and just about everything went wrong for the ride except a slide (heaven forbid). I'd wanted them to experience the perfect day that Jenny and I had in '07, but Murphy stepped in.

Even so, our friends still had a great time and even updated their ride 2 months after returning home because of the enjoyment of the rental (103cu Granny Glide). It wasn't my choice of ride because of enclosed spaces issues, but they LOVED it. All that being said, in Waikiki, we let the wives shop and grabbed a couple of Yammy mopeds for half a day. Absolute bundles of fun. About as safe as machine guns with hair triggers (no brakes, no indicators), but we had a ball. The mate wore his thongs out trying to stop haha!

Thongs as in pluggers, flip-flops, sandals. No male at all and no female over 25 should ever be seen in the OTHER thongs! Edited: 6:36 pm, April 02, 2011 One destination mentioned in this post We rented a couple HD Streetglides in Lahaina when we were on-island last month and took a ride up to the winery for a burger at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store (grill closes around 2:00PM). The skies opened up just as we got off the bikes. But after about 30 mins., blue skies once again. From there, we rode down to Makawao and Paia.
motorcycle lift table calgaryGreat ride, but I'm not sure we ever got out of 4th gear...

Weather can be a little iffy. If you head up to the winery, watch out for oncoming tour buses coming around the mountain from Hana in the afternoon. They seem to take their half in the middle. 3 destinations mentioned in this post Forgot to mention we rented from EagleRider in Lahaina near Star Noodle. You can sometimes find a discount coupon for them in Maui Gold, Driving Maui, or one of the other give-away mags you see around. Once you're in their system you get the discount coupon or not.
ktm rc8 motorcycles for saleThe Harley Dealership in Kahalui rents motorcycles too, and they also have a branch on Front St. near the Banyon Tree Park in Lahaina (EagleRider was a little cheaper). EagleRider had 2010 bikes and the dealer was renting 2011's. All were in good shape. You didn't say where you were staying or where you were planning on riding, but if you only plan on riding between Kapalua, Ka'anapali and Lahaina (for example), one of the scooters would be your best bet - much easier to park and they're a kick to ride around town.

Just don't take them out on the open highway heading over to Kahalui as the cars and trucks will eat you for lunch. Whatever bike you end up with, look it over closely before you rent it. A couple years ago we went to rent from another company and because of the salt air and humidity, the cables & linkages were all rusted. -:- Message from TripAdvisor staff -:-This topic has been closed to new posts due to inactivity.
