An analysis of last year’s test statistics by The Daily Telegraph showed that those in the Scottish Highlands and Islands were the most likely of all to pass. Excluding the smallest test centres, such as South Uist, where none of the five candidates failed, the highest pass rate was in Campbeltown, Argyll. Of the 120 test candidates, 87 passed – a rate of 72.5 per cent. Rural Scotland took the first five places in the driving test league table, while Wales accounted for four of the top 20. However Kendal, Cumbria, also proved fruitful for learners with a pass rate of 68.7 per cent among the 2,093 candidates, and Grantham, Lincs, which handled more than 3,200 candidates, came in 13th place with a pass rate of 63 per cent. At the other end of the scale, drivers in major urban areas – especially London and West Yorkshire – fared badly. The worst performing area was Heaton, Bradford, where only 31.6 per cent of candidates were successful. Six of the bottom 10 areas were in or around Greater London: Wanstead, Belvedere, Wood Green, Barking, Brentwood, and Barnet.
On average just under half of driving test candidates were successful overall over the past five years. Explaining the geographical disparity, Neil Greig, the director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said: “In rural areas, the need to pass a driving test is paramount. Candidates are going to make sure they are well prepared.” He added: “There may be fewer hazards such as roundabouts in some rural areas, but there are other risks, such as sheep.” A spokesman for the AA driving school warned: “There is no long-term benefit in only being able to drive on a certain type of road, so we would not recommend learners try to book their tests in remote areas on the off-chance they may find it easier to pass there.” Test centres with highest pass rate include Campbeltown, Argyll 72.5 per cent Kendal, Cumbria 68.7 per cent Llandrindod Wells, Powys 64.7 per cent Grantham, Lincs 63.7 per cent Barrow in Furness, Cumbria 62.7 per cent Test Centres with the lowest pass rate Wednesbury, West Midlands 35.1 per cent Wood Green, Greater London 34.4 per cent Belvedere, Greater London 33.4 per cent Wanstead
