I do not live in Lodi, but I work in the city Monday through Friday. I was in need of some jeans, and I stumbled upon Mr. Hassan's establishment. I have very little sense of adventure when it comes to jeans, and honestly I thought my visit to Hassan's was in vain. I found my regular brand and another that I had given up trying to find.

In addition (I found this out later) I had the privelege of being waited on by Mr Hassan himself! I found him to be most helpful and let me tell you, this man knows his jeans(He has been selling them for 48 years). It’s a “small-batch” menswear store, selling designer denim, plaid work shirts that give off a whiff of lumbersexual style, hand-tooled leather goods and more for the well-dressed modern man. Owner Jason Maxwell located his store in Ron Vrilakas’ stylish Broadway Triangle building after looking at locales in midtown and downtown and deciding that the rent was just too damn high. He ended up with a unique, light-filled space that’s all windows and just a hop, skip and a jump from some of the hottest hipster hangouts in town (Oak Park Brewing Company, Old Soul Coffee, Display).

Maxwell, a 36-year-old Lodi native, learned the retail business managing stores in the Bay Area for Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister and Target. Returning to Sacramento with a wife and three kids, he saw a void in the market for high-quality, contemporary menswear—not suits and ties but things like classic dark denim, button-up wovens and basic Ts without logos or prints. “I’m not a trend seeker,” he says. “These are pieces you can put in your closet and count on being in style years from now.” His product lines include denim from Tellason, Railcar, Freenote and Nudie ($165 to $240); Tellason work shirts complete with pockets for a pencil and a box cutter; Raen and TOMS sunglasses; waxed-canvas backpacks and industrial aprons; Red Wing Heritage work boots; and limited-edition footwear from New Balance. The store also carries hair, skin and shave products from Baxter of California and Ursa Major and masculine versions of home goods such as throw blankets, pillows, stationery and candles.
