Attendees of AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days take lap for history Story by Heather Wilson Photos by Jeff Guciardo, unless otherwise noted Chuck Gooden brought his 1967 BSA Lightning 650 to AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days on Friday, July 8, ready to take a Lap for History, always one of the more popular events. “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop giving you guys money for this (Lap for History),” Gooden said. “I tell people it’s the best $10 you’ll spend.” For this year’s lap, the Stow, Ohio, resident chose the BSA, which he bought 23 years ago. He paid $500 to have it restored. “It was a barn find from a guy I worked with,” Gooden said. “I’ve added some little details to make it more politically correct. It’s a hoot having this.” Another rider, Sean Eviston of Fort Wayne, Ind., said he has been attending AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days since it started. He brought his 1979 Suzuki 1000S Wes Cooley replica to enjoy a lap on the track.

“I bought it from the original owner in Modesto, Calif., and I haven’t changed a thing other than checking valves and timing,” Eviston said. He said his love of motorcycles grew out of his enjoyment of motorcycle magazines his dad brought home. Eviston was even able to have the 2016 Grand Marshal, Wes Cooley, sign the tank of the bike. The Lap for History–one lap around the road racing track at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course–is open to all in attendance at AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days, July 8-10. Laps are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, July 9, and at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 10. For 2016, with the generous support of Suzuki Motor of America, AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days honors the career of Suzuki rider and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Wes Cooley. The infield display, Celebrating 40 Years of AMA Superbikes, presented by Suzuki, will showcase the rich history of AMA Superbike racing with a number of historic championship-winning machines. The central piece of the display will be Cooley's 1980 championship-winning GS1000, which Cooley will ride in demonstration laps around the road race course each day.

The weekend includes the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Bike Show presented by Old Bike Barn, the American Motor Drome Wall of Death, a classic motorcycle field meet, demo rides of current production bikes, seminars, live music, raffle bikes and displays of AMA clubs and custom bike builders. or at the gate. A weekend pass is $60, a single-day admission for Saturday is $40 and a single-day admission for Sunday is $35. Kids 12 and under get in free.
