two stroke 500cc motorcycles for sale

It’s rare enough to find a 1973 Yankee Z in great condition. It’s a whole other matter to find one in completely original, unrestored condition with just 138 miles showing on the odometer. The bike comes along with an original title and documentation, and the original Alaska license tags from 1972. Find it here on eBay in Denver, Colorado with no reserve. Special thanks to TY reader Victor A. for this submission! As you may know, Yankee was America’s giant-killer enduro bike, built for a very short period of time. We question the year, because to our knowledge, Yankee only produced motorcycles in 1971. Of the 760 motorcycles the factory produced in its years of production, maybe some were titled as 1973s? Maybe because it was originally registered in Alaska, it took a while for it to make its way up there? Or maybe it’s just a typo. We’ll leave that to the buyer to investigate. Yankee was born near the Hudson River, in the gritty General Electric town of Schenectady, New York.

In the late 1960s, John Taylor’s Yankee Motor Company was importing OSSA 230cc motocross and enduro bikes, which were enjoying fabulous success. The Daytona 200-winning legend Dick Mann was competing with these OSSAs in 1/4-mile flat-track events and winning handily. His success on board Yankee’s imported OSSAs led to the development of a 250cc OSSA-powered “Dick Mann Replica,” or DMR, which featured a frame completely manufactured in Yankee’s Schenectady facility. The DMR would provide the test bed for the Yankee Z. The Yankee Z’s heart was the most notable of its myriad fascinating features. The engine is essentially two Spanish OSSA 250cc two-stroke singles melded together. By using the internals of the 250cc OSSAs, and mating them with a splined crankshaft, the two 250cc pistons fired simultaneously, giving the bike massive rooster-generating powers. Yankee Z’s were jam-packed with other interesting features, too. It would be the first production motorcycle to feature a rear disc brake, it used a six-speed gearbox, stainless steel handlebars, oval tubing for the rear swingarm, and forged aluminum fork crowns courtesy of Smith & Wesson in nearby Springfield, Massachusetts.

This example is amazingly well preserved. The seller lists just 138 miles showing on its odometer. The top quality photographs show a bike that looks like it was ridden a bit, with a bit of rust on the exhaust and a scuff on the fuel tank, but in otherwise honest, original condition. The seller received a question about whether the bike runs, and he answered that he hasn’t seen it run. It currently has no fuel in the tank and the seller recommended replacing the fuel lines. He was “willing to guarantee that it will run” in his response. The auction ends on July 29th. It’ll be fascinating to see where this bike will end up, given its condition, its rarity, and the increasing interest in motocross and enduro motorcycles from the 1970s.1960s Triumph Speed Twin ProjectListed: February 11, 2017 | This was my uncle's Triumph Speed Twin project that unfortunately never got assembled before he sadly died.
