Anyone have any resources or luck recovering a stolen bike? 330 posts, read 550,663 times 2,134 posts, read 1,793,755 times Originally Posted by camera shy Karim Cycle - South Berkeley - Berkeley, CA First off, I'm super sorry this happened. I had my awesome road bike stolen back in October from the 4th and King Safeway (after being parked (locked) for only 5 minutes out front), and I can say it was super devastating. It was particularly awful because it was a busy afternoon, and literally hundreds of people were around (probably watching) as the thief broke my lock and stole my bike...my faith in humanity was pretty low.
I never did recover my bike, but I also was on a mission to steal it back. There are many stories of people who found their bikes, a few I met in my experience to find my stolen bike. (For Sale on Craigslist) Mission Mission The first thing you need to do: file a police report. SFPD won't do anything to get your bike back, but this at least documents the entire experience. Also, if possible, find the receipt from when you originally bought (if you have it). Or if you don't have that, find the serial number. And if you don't have that, try to find pictures of you with the bike, particularly where you and the bike are easily identifiable. Basically, you just want to find documentation that this bike was yours. So if you confront the "thief" (who will most likely NOT give it back easily), you can prove that it's your bike beyond you saying "hey, that's my bike!" Second: there are indeed places that are notorious for stolen bikes. The ones that I read most about (and went to myself when I was looking for my bike):
Coliseum Flea Market - Oakland Karim Cycle - Berkeley (Karim Cycle - South Berkeley - Berkeley, CA)Craigslist (even in neighboring regions, like Sacramento) I think the flea markets are usually on the weekend, for the most part. I would make sure to go to the next flea market on the weekend. For me, going to those was really, really sad...you could just tell that probably a vast majority of the bikes there were stolen, or at least parts of the bikes were. It really just made me sick. I never did find my bike there, but I could tell there were some really nice (probably recently-stolen) bikes making the rounds. If you go, bring documentation with you that it's your bike (see above), and be ready to confront the person with the bike. I brought a couple of big friends as backup, but I'm sure police presence would help. All-in-all, it can be a really disheartening experience...but if you're determined to get it back, there is a glimmer of hope (maybe not huge, but it's there).
It was also really eye-opening. I didn't realize how huge of a problem stolen bikes are in the city (and area), and reading about the organized crime rings (between LA and SF) that get involved in the "trade" made me even more upset. I eventually got insurance money to get a new bike (which I'm much more careful and meticulous about locking up!)...but I still do really miss my old one. If you don't find it, don't get too upset. Have some hope, but don't get too consumed with it...and be prepared to let go, if you have to. At least you will have had the great memories with it before it was stolen. 9,198 posts, read 11,410,475 times Find my truck (white 88 Toyota + snugtop) while you're at it.
