SIDEBURN GIRL on camera. The biggest challenge for those staying at the Royal Oak isn’t wrestling with a slopey camping field (it’s flat); being kept awake by traffic (it’s not near a main road); or finding things to do (it’s slap bang in the middle of the Peak District). No, it’s chomping your way through one of the award-winning pies sold at the onsite pub. You could probably actually camp in one of these monsters – they’re that big. Packed with fine ingredients, they make for a fine reward after a day’s play in the Peaks, especially if accompanied by one of the excellent local draught ales. There are two camping fields here, one sloping and one flat, with space for around 40 pitches (bring strong pegs for the rocky ground in the upper field), and there’s a converted stone barn with comfortable bunks if the weather’s wreaking havoc.
Surrounded by over 100 acres of farmland, with the 13-mile Tissington Trail passing right next to it and the Limestone Way actually cutting through some of the site, this is a great base for those interested in walking and cycling – especially since the Parsley Hay Cycle Hire is two miles away and has a range of bikes for adults and kidsBakewell, Ashbourne, and the spa town of Buxton are all short drives away, making this an accessible and friendly place to get up close and personal with the British countryside – and its pies. The first few lines of the cool camping review say, "The biggest challenge for those staying at the Royal Oak isn’t wrestling with a slopey camping field (it’s flat); being kept awake by traffic (it’s not near a main road)". Unfortunately if you don't arrive early the lower (flat) field is full and you get the upper field which has a bit of a slope, the site is also only about 300m from the main Buxton to Ashbourne road (A515), which you can hear but the traffic isn't too heavy later in the evening.
Having got past those two issues the campsite is a nice size with not too many pitches. For our visit it was about 70% full but I would expect on peak days that there may be queues for the facilities which were decent overall. Having such a good pub on-site is a great bonus, on our first night we ate in there, the staff were great and the food was hearty. There was also no issue grabbing a beer from the bar to drink at your tent as you made dinner, which we did on the second night.Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell (with its lovely puddings) all a short drive away for those rainy days.In furture I will check a couple of additional reviews and not just rely on the cool camping one... The Royal Oak is a lovely campsite. We have stayed there three times now and definately plan to go back. The site is small, the facilities are ample for even the bussiest occasions. With small children it was lovely to be able to pop into the pub to grab a round of drinks and take them back to sit outside the tent – a night at the pub with no need for a babysitter!
