There's certainly a lot to learn, but we're all here to have a great time with our friends & motorcycles. Let's start with training & licensing: requires all motorcycle riders to possess a valid motorcycle license or endorsement.

By far the best way to go about getting yourself a license is to sign up for a motorcycle training course provided by Safety Services Nova Scotia. Whether you have never been on a motorcycle before, or have been riding for years, this course will help you become the safest rider possible. Upon completion of the course, the students will be handed a Motorcycle Learner's Permit. (This course also reduces the probationary period, and in most cases reduces insurance premiums!) For more info on the Nova Scotia motorcycle course, click here! So you've got your license. The first question when it comes to motorcycle shopping is: What do you need from your motorcycle? Basically, what do you see yourself doing with it? There are several different types of motorcycle, and many have different things that they're great at. Certainly the best way to familiarize yourself with the popular models is to drop in to Pro Cycle and our friendly staff will guide you through your selection process, although it's nice to get a jump and see them online!

Here are a couple of motorcycle types to consider: These look like large dirtbikes, but are meant for long distances and whatever terrain you may encounter. With a tall seat height, they can be tricky in every day traffic, but loaded with luggage and headed cross-country they are in their element. Cruisers are typically adorned with chrome, and a relaxed & low seating position. Perfect for just "cruising" around town, or enjoying a back road at a relaxed pace. Most cruisers have a friendly V-twin engine that supplies lots of torque and that engine rumble that is so recognizable. There are really two-different types of scooter. The first are typically above 250cc, and are a bit larger in size. These are a comfortable way to tour around, as they have an easy step-through design and an automatic transmission. The second is the smaller scooter that is usually between 50-125cc. These scooters are a fun & fast way to get around town as they're very easy to ride, extremely low fuel consumption and low maintenance.

This is an excellent class of motorcycle for riders who are just starting, or those who want a fun & nimble bike with excellent fuel mileage. These bikes are smaller & have less engine displacement than the 600cc+ machines, but are often times more fun to ride! These are often low maintenance and are great for local commuting & back road riding with friends. These are aggressively-styled motorcycles with a dedication to performance. These can be a bit uncomfortable when trying to ride in traffic, and are meant to be used on a back road with nice corners, or aiming for a good lap time at the local race track. (Which is a great time as well. See the Atlantic Roadracing League for details on how you can sign up for their High Performance Riding Academy!) These are typically defined by the use of an upright riding position and the lack of side or bottom fairings. These usually have a sporty engine, but are great for most everyday riding. These bikes are usually easier to ride in traffic as the riding position is easier to manoeuvre the bike at low speeds.

Touring bikes are the heavyweight hitters of long-distance riding. These are larger machines, often with big windscreens, luggage, navigation & radio. Sport Touring bikes are similar in style, but are a little bit smaller in scale to accommodate a little bit more sporty riding style. If you're going to start motorcycling, you're going to need some proper motorcycle riding gear. Our knowledgeable Apparel Department staff is well-versed in making sure you get everything you need to be protected, comfortable and of course, looking awesome! There are many different shapes, colours and sizes of helmet available. We would always suggest the full-faced style to riders as it offers the maximum amount of protection. Open-face, and short helmets are also an option, and some riders prefer the more open feeling. Price range can vary a large amount, and usually a more expensive helmet will provide better venting, better fit/finish, and overall a better quality of helmet. A proper helmet fitment is important.

We have helmets of all ranges in stock, and can help you find the perfect model & size for you. Riding jackets are usually made of a very durable nylon material and in some cases leather. Some riding jackets can be waterproof, or made with mesh panels for ventilation. Some may have a short & snug fit while other may be longer & more insulated. There's a style of riding jacket for just about anything you'd want it for. Pants are also available in leather or nylon, as well as a nylon or kevlar reinforced denim for lower body protection. Motorcycle gloves are incredibly important as our hands are one of our most needed tools for day-to-day activities. Gloves are typically made of leather, and are available in many styles, sizes and colours. Many riders will find themselves with several pairs of gloves, as it's nice to have a well vented set for hot days, as well as an insulated set for those cold spring & fall rides. Fit is very important as you'll need to operate the controls of your machine.
