Witnesses report hearing a loud bang and seeing flames coming from the motorcycle.
Senior Sergeant Matt Campbell said Police Forensics were investigating the incident. Snr Sgt Campbell said it was too early to confirm if speed played a role in the fatal crash. "The investigation is still in the early stages, the road will be blocked for at least the next hour," Snr Sgt Campbell said. Police praised the quick action of bystanders, helping to extinguish the flames and attending to the motorcyclist. "I believe a member of the public may have involved themselves with extinguishing the fire," Snr Sgt Campbell said. "Queensland Fire also attended and completely extinguished it, but we did receive assistance from a member of public which is good." Bystanders watched on in shock as paramedics performed CPR on the man for more than 20 minutes. A Rene St business owner reported hearing the motorcycle take off down the street, moments before the crash. "We heard him come up the street," he said. "We heard him scream, one of my guys said he heard the bang.
The single occupant of the other vehicle was not injured. The motorcyclist had just left Mike's Custom Shop, a Harley-Davidson parts shop, on Rene St when the crash occurred. Mike's Custom Shop owner Mike Manassee said the 53-year-old man had been a customer at the shop for a number of years. "He was a customer of mine," Mr Manassee said. "He was here before he left, he wanted to get his bike done, but I wasn't here. "That's why he had to come back." Mr Manassee said the man was a usually joyful person.
