BANGKOK — Two migrant workers from Myanmar were arrested Friday after police said they confessed to killing two British tourists whose battered bodies were found on a beach in southern Thailand last month. Thailand’s national police chief Gen. Somyot Poompanmoung said DNA results late Thursday night backed up the confessions of the two men to raping and killing 23-year-old Hannah Witheridge, and killing David Miller, 24, on Koh Tao, an island known for its pristine diving sites. “Two Myanmar suspects have confessed to killing the pair,” Somyot told AFP. “DNA test results [from the two men] confirmed that the same DNA was found in the body of the [female] victim.” Maj Gen Kiattpoing Khawsamang, who is one of the investigators, told AFP that the two men had admitted to raping Witheridge. “Both raped the female victim,” he said. A source told The Bangkok Post that police began paying special attention on Sept 30 to 10 people after discovering one of them was captured on a security camera at a convenience store on Sairee beach buying a packet of L&M cigarettes.
DNA samples taken from cigarette butts of the same L&M brand, which were found near the crime scene, matched those extracted from semen retrieved from Witheridge, the same source said. The police previously learned from a number of staff at a resort near the crime scene that a group of three Myanmar nationals, who were believed to be close friends, liked to hang around together playing guitars on the beach, the source said. Police identified the 21-year-old workers from Myanmar’s western Rakhine state as “Win” and “Saw.” Both were detained on the island Thursday and questioned by police who brought them to the crime scene Friday to re-enact their alleged crimes, a standard part of criminal investigations in Thailand. Crowds of onlookers watched as the suspects were led to the rocky alcove along the shore where the two bodies were discovered Sept. 15. Autopsies showed that Witheridge died from head wounds while Miller suffered severe blows to the head and drowned in the surf.
It is still unclear what prompted the killings. During the re-enactment, the two men wore flak jackets and motorcycle helmets as protection against angry residents, who fear the crime will damage tourism to the remote island.motorcycle superstore inc medford oregon “There was clear evidence: forensic evidence, [testimony from] witnesses and other evidence, as well as closed-circuit television footage,” Somyot told reporters. motorcycle dealer in fredericksburg va“The police and investigation teams have analyzed all evidence and it’s clear that the two suspects committed the crime on that day.”motorcycle trailers for sale wilmington nc
The two face charges of murder, rape and theft, but have not yet been formally charged, Somyot said. “From now on, we have to be careful not to let an incident like this be repeated,” said Prayuth, adding that he had asked the Labor Ministry to handle the issue of undocumented migrant workers since there were reports that the two suspects were working without proper legal papers. Thai authorities frequently accuse migrants from Myanmar and Cambodia of committing crimes in the kingdom, where they make up a vast, poorly paid and low-status workforce. But police have insisted they would not scapegoat anyone for the crime, despite coming under immense pressure to get a result as anger built over an apparently sluggish investigation in the days after the bodies were found. Busey, 44, of Malibu, was driving west on Washington Boulevard near Robertson Boulevard at 11:40 a.m. when his Harley-Davidson motorcycle fell to the ground, Culver City Police Sgt. Karin Reagan said."He was thrown off, and the back of his head struck the curb," Reagan said. "He was not wearing a helmet."Busey opposed mandatory helmet laws for motorcyclists and appeared at a packed benefit last month at North Hollywood's Palomino Club to raise money to hire lobbyists in Sacramento to fight such a bill. The event's sponsor, the California Motorcyclist Assn., argues that untrained and unlicensed riders are a greater danger than riders without helmets.Reagan said Busey had just left a motorcycle shop about half a block away on Washington when the accident occurred, and there was no indication that he was speeding. A preliminary investigation indicated that no other vehicles or pedestrians were involved, she said. The actor was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where physicians performed neurosurgery, hospital spokesman Ron Wise said."
He is in critical condition with extensive head trauma, and he is in intensive care," Wise said late Sunday.Role in MiniseriesLast week, Busey starred as an American journalist in "A Dangerous Life," an HBO cable television miniseries chronicling the revolution that toppled Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos and brought Corazon Aquino to power.Busey had knocked around Hollywood a dozen years before landing the title role in "The Buddy Holly Story." His electrifying performance as the late rock 'n' roll pioneer put his career into full ascent. But success overwhelmed him, and by his own admission, he lost his bearings. His weight ballooned, as did his drug and alcohol use."I walked into a theater (where "Buddy Holly" was playing) and no one knew me," he said five years ago. "I walked out and I was literally mobbed. It was very difficult to figure that out, especially for someone who grew up being rejected most of his life."Earlier this year Busey said he had quit using drugs in 1985.Effects of Drugs"Until then, I was so wired I could set up a Ferris wheel all by myself in 10 minutes," he said.
