It is essential to ensure that the helmet you are wearing fits correctly. If it is too small then it will obviously be uncomfortable, but if it is too big then it won’t provide the proper protection and could come off in the event of an accident. Use a tape measure or a piece of string to measure around your head. The tape measure should rest just above your eyebrows and ears, which is the longest distance around your head. Make a note of the measurement in centimetres – this will be your normal helmet size. Use the table below to find your motorcycle helmet size – for example, if the measurement around your head is 58cm, you should try a medium helmet.

If you’ve never worn a motorcycle helmet before, to properly try one on you should hold onto it by the chin straps so that the helmet is upside down and with the front of the helmet facing you. Place your thumbs on the inner section of the helmet straps and balance the helmet with your index fingers. Then, while holding the straps apart pull the helmet up and slip it over your head. While wearing the helmet, take a careful note of the way that it fits your head. Make sure that there are no gaps between the pads and that they are in direct contact with your cheeks. Helmet padding and linings will compress after a while, so a snug fit should be expected in a new helmet but there should not be too much pressure – proper protection should not be uncomfortable. Check for any gaps around your temples and the crown padding. Make sure that you also check the back of the helmet where the neck roll comes into contact with the skin.

If it pushes the helmet away at the back then this could make it roll down over your eyes. Make sure that there is no movement in the helmet’s fit – hold the helmet securely with one hand on each side and try to rotate it from side to side. The last test may be slightly uncomfortable, but it is essential to ensure that the helmet fits properly. Whilst wearing the helmet, fasten the chin strap – keeping your head steady, reach over the top of the helmet and grab the back of the helmet’s bottom edge with one or both hands. Try to roll the helmet forward off your head – if it comes off, or is close to coming off then the helmet is too large. Finally, remove the helmet and have a look for any redness on your forehead or cheeks. Any marks could indicate a pressure point, and whilst this may not be noticeable for a short time it could be uncomfortable over longer periods.
