Russ Brown is a personal injury lawyer specializing in motorcycle accidents. Born in San Jose, California, Brown began riding motorcycles when he was 16, racing at a dirt track in Santa Maria, California.[2] Brown attended college at UCLA where he majored in marketing. Following his graduation from the San Fernando Valley College of Law, he passed the State Bar of California exam in 1970.[3] After practicing general personal injury law for 5 years, Brown began representing motorcyclists almost exclusively in 1975. Brown has been involved in many nationally known movements for motorcyclist rights and awareness. Brown created Bikers Against Manslaughter - now called BAM - a group of over 1.5 million "bikers helping bikers" providing free breakdown and legal assistance. Brown fought against a mandatory law on motorcycle helmets in California during the 1980s. Brown believed "forcing people to wear helmets is an infringement of their own personal liberties."[5] In March 1990, Brown appeared on Today (NBC program) in a nationally televised debate with California Assemblyman Richard Floyd (California).
In 1996, Brown won a case in California where a judge ruled that dogs were legal passengers on motorcycles. (2) surviving helmeted riders suffered 46 to 85 percent fewer incidences of severe, serious, and critical head injuries than nonhelmeted riders; (3) 9 studies indicated that helmet use under universal laws ranged from 92 to 100 percent, while unlegislated helmet use generally ranged from 42 to 59 percent; (4) 20 studies comparing motorcycle fatality rates under universal helmet laws found that fatality rates were 20 to 40 percent lower when universal helmet laws were in effect; (5) the decreases in fatality rates when laws were enacted were matched by comparable increases when the laws were repealed; (6) studies indicated that nonhelmeted riders were more extensive users of medical services and long-term care, and were more likely to die or lose earning capacity through disability; (7) data on the cost of medical services rendered to motorcycle accident victims were unclear, but studies showed that society pays for much of the care for accident victims through tax-supported programs or insurance premiums;
