Dr. Lloyd’s passion is motorcycling, which, along with automobile accidents, is a leading cause of traumatic brain injuries in the United States. Dr. Lloyd has obtained certification through the Institute for Police Technology and Management (ITPM) on Motorcycle Crash Investigation, as well as certification in Reconstruction and Analysis of Motorcycle Accidents through the Society for Automotive Engineering (SAE). Dr. Lloyd’s ultimate goal as a biomechanics expert is to develop a new generation of advanced helmets using intelligent materials to provide protection against both blunt force trauma to the head as well as traumatic brain injuries. His research has lead to the development of Impact Absorbing Composite Materials, a patent on which has been filed with the United States Patents and Trademarks Office (USPTO). The efficacy of this design was demonstrated during the NI Week keynote presentation in 2014, which can be viewed on YouTube.  Consequently Dr. Lloyd is currently exploring the utility of this patent with several helmet industry manufacturers to provide advanced head and brain injury protection to motorcyclists, football players and participants in many other sports that require helmets.
