College of Interdisciplinary StudiesExtended Programs & Regional DevelopmentNon-Credit Programs Instructors: Mid Tenn Motorcycle Education Program A minimum of six hours of classroom instruction prepares you for at least 10 hours of practical riding in a controlled, off-street environment - typically, a parking lot. You’ll learn how to operate a motorcycle safely, with emphasis on the special skills and mental attitude necessary for dealing with traffic. You’ll start off with straight-line riding, turning, shifting, and stopping, and gradually progress to cornering, swerving, and emergency braking. In the classroom, you’ll learn about the different types of motorcycles, their controls, and how they operate. The instructor will advise you on what to wear for protection and comfort. You’ll also find out how alcohol and other drugs affect your ability to ride safely. A very important segment of this course will show you how to create your own strategy for riding in traffic and dealing with critical situations.

The course concludes with a knowledge test and a skill evaluation. Motorcycles and helmets are included in your course fee. Most motorcycles used in this course are loaned by local dealers. All instructors are experienced motorcyclists certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. During the 2015 state rally, the hub city of the Upper Cumberland hosted ­­­nearly 2,700 attendees from 37 states and three foreign countries. Motorcycling is a popular economic driver for Tennessee with popular riding routes throughout the state’s backroads.  The average Harley-Davidson rider is estimated to spend more than three-hundred dollars per day when traveling, making motorcycle tourism a market Tennessee happily embraces. “We are honored to host an event of this caliber. Not only is this a huge win for Cookeville, but for the state as we welcome H.O.G. members from around the globe to Tennessee today, one year from today and beyond,” Commissioner Kevin Triplett, Tennessee Department of Tourist Development said. “Our branding campaign for the state is The Soundtrack of America.
