See More Articles >HobNob restaurant owner Mike Aletto said, “We have somebody that’s illegally dumping tires” on the property. He said the tires appear to have been rolled down the steep hill at the eastern end of his parking lot and into the breakwater rocks along Lake Michigan. Aletto said he contacted Somers, made reports with the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Deptartment and told the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources what happened. “We really don’t know who is doing it,” he said. “We want them prosecuted.” Aletto said he was also concerned about the potential environmental and health issues involved. Fix It visited the HobNob on April 20 and took a look at the pile of tires at the bottom of the hill. Fix It stopped counting at 175. Additionally, tires were also dumped at the property many will remember as the former Southern Foods location a bit farther south on Highway 32 in Somers, but those have since been removed.

Fix It contacted William Morris, administrator for the village and town of Somers, to ask if Somers was able to assist the property owner. Morris said, “I did have someone take a look. There’s probably in excess of 90-100 some tires that have been dumped.” Morris said the situation was “way beyond the scope of normal (Somers) public works abilities” and was trying to get other governmental agencies involved that have more authority and the wherewithal to address “who’s doing this and what’s going on.” Is the DNR going to help the property owner clean up the tires or is the tire clean up the property owner’s responsibility? Marcus L. Smith, public affairs manager with the DNR, wrote: “This would be considered an illegal disposal on private property. The cleanup of illegal disposal is the responsibility of the property owner and/or the responsible party if that is known. The state does not have funds for clean up of illegal tire disposal.” Has the DNR been able to offer any other assistance to this property owner, such as pursuing any offender?

If so, what would that be? Smith wrote, “We have not received any information regarding the responsible party, so we are unable to take any action at this time.” Have there been other recent used tire dumping episodes like this in Kenosha County that the DNR is aware of? Smith wrote, “DNR staff checked our Waste and Materials Management Program database for complaints regarding persons dumping tires in Racine and Kenosha counties dating back to Jan. 1, 2015. We did not find any complaints relating to tire disposal (dumping) except for this current one involving the Hobnob Restaurant property.” A group of volunteers helped the HobNob out with the cleanup of the tires. The local Copperhead motorcycle group, composed of law enforcement and military riders, had a half-dozen group members help restaurant employees clean up 282 tires from the HobNob on Wednesday. Club president Alvin Burdick said “At the end of the day, we were all happy to be able to help out.”

Simon Ciesielski, an area manager with tire vendor Bridgestone Retail Operations, said the company would be donating services to haul the tires away Thursday. Ciesielski said when he heard of the number of tires, “I’m like, ‘Holy cow.’ That’s almost a semi-truck worth of used tires… There’s a lot better ways of (getting rid of) them than just dumping them.” Aletto said of the resolution to situation, “It will end a positive. I thank them (the volunteers) from the bottom of my heart for the support from the community.” Thank you to Menards for following through on its promise to repaint the pavement lines at the three-way stop on 74th Place near the business. This is a private street Menards co-owns with other area businesses. This was the subject of a Fix It published March 20, 2015. Reader KD contacted Fix It with that concern about the intersection near Menards, Palmen Buick-GMC-Cadillac and other businesses just north of Highway 50 and about a half mile west of Highway 31.
