Whether you’re an under-grad or post-grad, let’s cover the uncomMan basics: Favorite brand: Sperry (Gold Cup Authentic Original 2-Eye Boat Shoe, $150.00) This spring and summer staple is versatile, can be dressed up or down, worn on the water or on the way to work, and with pants or shorts.  Meet the parents, tailgate, or lounge in functional footwear developed for the fraternity man. Alternative: Tom’s (Espadrilles) – for those with earthier variety. Whether or not you hunt, these duck boots provide a waterproof shield to all your mudding and cold weather needs.  Try the Gore-Tex/Thinsulate models, or go big with a 10” Shearling lined Maine version (photo below, $199.00). If you experience unpredictability, like Chicago weather, you’ll thank me for the extra layer – and these boots work equally well during the summer rainy days as well. A very good commute swap if you don’t feel like ripping salt holes in your new oxfords. And, they’re made in the USA.

Alternative: Red Wing 9185 Cooper Rough & Tough (Brooks Brothers) – a little dressier, and awesome. Favorite brand: Ferragamo, Tod’s, Car Shoe, Lacoste You want to be taken seriously?  Then you’re going to need some frat cleats.  They might be pricey (Saba Driving Moccasin, $395.00), but when a boat shoe won’t cut it, or you want to dress up a little, opt for a driving shoe. I like mine with a tassle (for conversation), but a classic brown leather or suede will get you into anywhere you want to be.  For flair, add a horsebit.  The nice thing about a driver is you can take your pick with the brand.  I’d go with a bar pair for nights out on the town, and a dressier pair for fancier occasions.  See Tod’s or Car Shoe (very Italian) if you can afford it, see Lacoste or search Zappos for some more colorful varieties. Favorite brand: Clarks (Desert Boot, $119.95) Maybe the greatest fall shoe ever invented.  From leather to suede to beeswax, every texture and color is at your disposal. 

They can be as casual as you want, including many brands from surf companies, to the standard Clarks, to dressier leather models with wooden soles. Favorite brand: Rainbow (Men’s Hemp Double Stack, $39.95) Once you own a pair, you’ll never go back.  On the beach, in class, out to lunch – these are a warm weather necessity. Alternative: Reef / Vineyard Vines Favorite brand: New Balance (Custom 993, $189.95) The 993’s are one of the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned.  Walk the town or hit the gym in these essentials, and confidently display that “USA” stitching across the heel.  Ryan Gosling told Steve Carell the only two people worthy of the right to wear a new balance sneaker included fraternity men, and Steve Jobs.  This would then apply to you because what Ryan says goes (he’s definite a 5/5 on the Chill-to-Pull ratio). Alternative: Nike Free – a little more streamlined and colorful, for the sportier type. The alternatives provided here are ways to spin what you may like, but everyone else already owns, into something unique.
