The second most important standard is SNELL, SNELL is a privately administered body that defines the standards to be followed by protective headgear. The SNELL standards are far stricter than the DOT standards, approved SNELL helmets will also have a ‘SNELL Approved’ sticker on them. While you may be after cool motorcycle helmets, you have to remember that safety always comes first! Make sure you look for ‘DOT approved’ before you make a purchase. Helmet materials are something covered by both DOT and SNELL, however, you knowing what your helmet is made from really can’t hurt. Your helmet should be tough but also light-weight, the best materials are generally Kevlar, Carbon-Fibre or fibreglass. This Italian company was founded by Gino Amisano in 1946. To begin with AGV made leather seats and motorcycle saddles, a year later in 1947 they made their very first motorcycle helmet. The brand today is most notably associated with Valentino Rossi who has worn an AGV helmet throughout his career. Arai are a Japanese company that designs and makes very cool motorcycle helmets. Every single one of their helmets is hand made and meets SNELL standards. An Arai helmet won’t be cheap, but if you want quality, you won’t find many better than a helmet made by Arai. Bell were founded in California in 1954 by Roy Richter. Today, Bell make all kinds of helmets and accessories for all kinds of vehicles from motorcycle to go-karts.

The helmets are well known for their safety, quality and advanced design. HJC have been around since 1971 and specialise in making motorcycle helmets, they have been the number one motorcycle helmet brand in North America since 1992. The newest line of HJC helmets are mid-range lightweight helmets that have many features you would expect of far more expensive helmets. KB are based in California and have facilities spanning across the globe to handle distribution. KBC make all types of motorcycle helmets, including street, cruiser and off-road helmets. Masei are one of the much newer motorcycle helmet brands, having only started in 2009. ‘Masei’ means ‘Devil Star’ in Japanese, where the company happens to be based. All Masei helmets meet DOT standards and they are committed to developing new and innovative products. Nolan are based in Italy and are incredibly popular in Europe, holding over 50% of the European market. Nolan generally focus on their incredible line of DOT approved modular helmets.
