Stay on top of the tire industry and don't miss a thing!A sports-touring tyre designed for big-bore adventure bikes.Adventure motorcycles are a class of machine with a lot of variation in style and application. In this group of bikes you have everything from single-cylinder 400s to twin-cylinder 1290s and just about every other engine and capacity format in between. With so many machines to choose from, it’s no wonder that you’ll see these machines used as off-road adventurers, tourers, sports-tourers or even at track days. The most popular of these highly-versatile machines are the big capacity machines like the Aprilia Caponord, BMW S1000XR or R12GS, Ducati Multistrada, KTM Adventures, Triumph Explorer and Suzuki V-Strom.

They have heaps of power, excellent handling, they are good at touring on any road and all go off-road with varying degrees of ease and enjoyment for the rider. The 17-inch wheeled machines like the Caponord, S1000XR, Multistrada and Kawasaki Versys are more at home on the tarmac. They can do the off-road ok, but a 19- or 21-inch front wheel is much better for that sort of terrain. Same goes the other way around: the smaller front wheels make for a better sports riding experience, but you aren’t going to be disappointed with that of the bigger wheeled machines. Most people that own these adventure style machines don’t get to spend as much time adventuring as they’d probably like and instead spend more time riding ‘normal’ roads than through dirt and dust. As such, a tyre that can suit the need of the regular adventure bike owner who wants sport-touring performance on the road with good off-road capability is something that a lot of riders out there are looking for. It’s with the intention of fore filling that need Pirelli released the Scorpion Trail II late last year.

It’s the direct successor to the Scorpion Trail and rolls in the handling, durability and longevity technology from the highly-claimed Angel GT sports-touring tyre and blends it with the off-road capability of the Scorpion Trail.Having spent a lot of time on different bikes with Scorpion Trails on them, I was keen to see how the new tyre was off-road. After a big freeway stretch with no noise from the tyres and excellent stability at high speeds it was on to a hard-packed dirt road, typical of the type you can hit exploring just outside an East Coast metro centre – a long and varied surface twisting, rising and falling its way across the Great Dividing Range.Riding Suzuki’s latest V-Strom, the 19-inch front gives great handling characteristics between road and off-road conditions. With the V-Strom’s traction control set on its lowest setting, drive off dusty and gravelly corners was excellent. Better still was the direct feeling and great traction I had in the front-end – something that you need to have on any big adventure bike!

With the electronics off it took a better hand on the throttle to get the V-Strom out of corners as efficiently as the electronics did, but the drive was still great and directional stability at high-speed excellent. On the brakes the grip was good and it was only when I hit a section of graded and wet dirt road did I have to wind things back a notch. In any slushy condition you’ll be down to a slower pace on a bike this size anyway, no matter the tyre. If I was on a cross-country expedition where I’d be more likely to come across this sort of condition, I’d have knobbies on. But like most adventure bike riders, most of the time I need sporty handling, a long tyre life and confidence in the wet, so it was back to the tarmac.Like anyone else, I couldn’t make it rain so unfortunately I can’t vouch for how these tyres perform in the wet. But I have ridden on the Angel GT in the wet and know they are a great tyre. The longevity also is something I can only vouch for with the Angel GT.

The fact a lot of the Angel GT’s technology is used in this tyre in these areas will improve an area that wasn’t the strongest point of the old Scorpion Trail. The Scorpion Trail II has a very quick warm-up and great stability at high-speed – another two important factors on these big-power adventure bikes. Stability when cornering doesn’t for a second feel like an off-road tyre can and grip in all conditions can not be questioned. Even on the more powerful 112kW, 17-inch wheeled Ducati Multistrada the Scorpion Trail II felt and acted like a sports tyre. The Scorpion Trail II is the tyre the Scorpion Trail was off-road. It gives great drive and traction on acceleration and cornering, is stable at speed and gives a lot of confidence in the front-end. On the road it behaves like a sports tyre. Durability and wet weather performance are two key aspects I have no doubt will be as great as the Angel GT that it borrows a lot of architecture from.Fronts come in 17-, 19- and 21-inch sizes while the rear comes in 17-inch diameters ranging from a 140 to a 190/55, with a 130 coming soon.
