Gary Dudley, 51, was about 50 miles away on the seventh day of a 13-day bike ride across Indiana to raise money for families of fallen police officers. The couple’s routine on those cycling days was for Gary to call his wife of 15 years once in the morning and once in the evening. On that day, Aug. 22, 2006, he called at about noon.“We had a great conversation,” she recalled, ending with “I love you.”Fifteen minutes later, he was gone.A truck plowed into a support vehicle along the bike route in west central Indiana, pushing it into the cyclists. Dudley, who had organized the annual COPS charity ride (Indiana Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors), was killed, along with Lake County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Gary Martin.

The irony that the officers were killed while participating in a fundraiser for fallen officers’ families was difficult to accept.Today, Carolyn Dudley lives in the same house she and Gary built in Brownsburg. She still works as a physical therapist, attends Cornerstone Christian Church and dotes on her nieces and nephews. She and Gary never had children of their own.But the families and children of fallen officers were her husband’s passion, so they have become hers.On Saturday, nine years to the day since her husband died, she will preside over the ninth annual Gary’s Ride, which starts at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield and winds through Hendricks County. ($22 individuals, $50 families). She also will award 10 scholarships to the children of Indiana police officers who have died in the line of duty. To date, $180,000 has been awarded from the Gary Dudley Memorial Scholarship Foundation.“For me, knowing what Gary was doing at the time of his death to help families of fallen officers made it easier for me to do this,” Carolyn said.

“It was a very emotional time for myself, his friends, family and co-workers, but we wanted to continue his mission.”Gary Dudley was an avid bicyclist and commander of the Indiana State Police Academy when he died. His good friend Rich Crawford, a master trooper with the Indiana State Police, was with him that day, cycling in the front of the nine-man unit.“Everything that happened that day is still very clear in my mind,” Crawford said this week.

Gary was a very honorable man, and I miss him still. He wanted to honor those officers who’d given their lives in the line of duty, and we were encouraged to keep this going.”So now, the annual COPS ride continues, while Gary’s Ride, started by Carolyn Dudley, complements it by focusing strictly on scholarships. There are six routes for Saturday’s ride, including a family ride on trails through Plainfield.

In addition, a free safety fair from 9 a.m. to noon at the Law Enforcement Academy is open to the public.Carolyn Dudley continues to feel the pain of her husband’s absence, but his presence at Saturday’s ride also will be felt — in the camaraderie of his friends, family and fellow officers. And in the stories that she treasures.“What’s heartwarming are the stories I’ve never heard before from people I’ve never met. Gary was the tough guy at the academy, but in time, others learned about his humor and his kindness.“Gary would be very proud of what we’re accomplishing. He would be amazed at the community support we’ve had,” she said.Another event supporting the Gary Dudley Memorial Scholarship foundation is the second annual Church Brothers Collision Repair Car Show, set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 29 at 751 N.
