Kumar with his three restored bikes Photo: Aswin V.N.Photo Credit: Aswin V.N. There are many in the city who like living life in the fast lane. While many motorcycle enthusiasts enjoy burning the rubber on newer models, its vintage bikes, the Jawas/Yezdis, the Royal Enfields, the Nortons, the Triumphs, the Indian Chiefs, the BSAs, the elusive Borough Superiors…that send them into a collective overdrive.

No wonder, the city is home to many vintage bike collectors, young and old, several of whom are keen restorers too. And that’s despite the expenses and the difficulties in maintaining the vehicles in mint condition. Meet a few of these motorcycle restorers who live for the smooth ride. Twenty-three-year old Vivek B. Kumar, a software engineer has a craze for old Yamahas. His love for bikes started with his father’s 1970 model Royal Enfield Bullet 350 on which he has been riding on since he was a toddler. Today Vivek cherishes three bikes; a Bullet, a 2000 model Yamaha RX-135 and RX-Z, all of them in mint condition. Vivek says: “The power that the two-stroke Yamahas, especially RD350 and RD400, provide is unmatched. They are durable, well built and easy to handle. While riding it you feel you are on something special.” Vivek himself restored the three bikes. “I have most of the tools required to repair a bike. The parts for the Yamaha are not readily available in open market but can be sourced through dealers.

The non-availability of expert mechanics and the high charge demanded by workshops is an issue while restoring Yamahas,” he says. Sree Kumar a.k.a. Sudarsanan, who owns a catering company, first rode a Bullet when he was working for the Khadi Board in early 90s. “Since then it has been Bullets all the way. It is such a wonderful vehicle. It is not surprising that many of the old Bullets to be found in the city are still in top condition. They are built for endurance and longevity. It’s a solid vehicle altogether and the best bike for slow rides. Also, for a big person like me, the Bullet is the most comfortable bike,” says Sudarsanan. Although not a hardcore rider, he owns two 1969 model Bullet 350, a 1996 model Standard Bullet 500, a 1988 Chetak and 1967 model Priya Scooter. He has restored both the 1969 bullet models, one of which has recently been given a modern look. He says: “Bullets are easy to maintain because most of the parts are readily available and there are also several mechanics in the city who are specialised in repairing these bikes.

Restoration works though are tough on the pocket.” At present, Sudarsanan is in the process of buying and restoring a 1982 model Bullet. “My love for vintage bikes began with my grandfather. Then, my father bought a BSA Golden Flash. Both my father and grandfather were bike enthusiasts and I’ve followed their path,” says businessman Surjith Udaykumar, a collector of British bikes. He has arguably one of the most enviable collection of bikes in the city, if not the country, collected over a period of two decades. Surjith’s collection of 10 British bikes mainly includes twin cylinder beauties such as 1959 Norton Dominator 500cc, 1958 Norton 750cc, BSA Golden Flash 650, Triumph Tiger 500cc and 1957 Royal Enfield 500. All of his bikes have been beautifully restored. “I had to import most of the parts from the United Kingdom. But a bigger problem is that there are only a handful of mechanics, who are capable of repairing these bikes. Also, it would cost me four to five times more to restore these bikes today when compared to 10 to 20 years ago, since the parts have become more costly,” he says.

Flying high on Yezdis The sight of his uncle riding the roaring Yezdi made Sreejith Karunakaran, Secretary, Smoking Barrels – Trivandrum Yezdi Jawa Motoring Club, to fall in love with the vehicles. Today Sreejith, a hardcore rider and racing enthusiast, owns 11 Yezdis. A Yezdi, in his opinion, is one of the best bikes for long trips as it can run long distances without breaks. Says Sreejith: “It is a well-built bike made for power and consistency. It’s pure metallic and thus heavy, unlike the new models that rely heavily on plastic. It is also a great bike for off-roading.” His collection consists of top Yezdi bikes such 250 Monarch, Road King, D250 and CL2 (electronic). He also owns a rare Jawa 350 Oil Master. Sreejith himself has restored five of his bikes. “When it comes to restoration, the main problem is the inefficiency of mechanics here in the city. In my opinion, the best place for restoration of Yezdi and Jawa bikes is Mysuru or Bengaluru. In these centres labour charges are much less and the work is also fast.”
