It was in October 1952 that Hirotake started to supply the first Japanese hand made motorcycle helmets to the professional motorcycle scramble racers.

In March 1967 the first Japanese hand made full face motorcycle helmet was introduced to the general public. The company that Hirotake Arai founded is still in the family's company three generations later.  Hirotake Arai passed away on June 14th 1986 and his son Michio Arai took over his father's company as the President of Arai Hirotake, Ltd. Michio changed the company name to "Arai Helmet Limited" on 1st December 1986. Arai's single-minded devotion with the comfort and safety of riders comes from years of perseverance.  Each Arai Motorcycle Helmet is virtually 100% hand-made, with a unique 'birth certificate' and a record kept of every step involved in its manufacturing process, from the outer shell formation to the final test tweak of its air vents.  The community of Arai workers who build the helmet are so involved it's as if their family name was on the front.  They actually sign with pride the inside of the particular helmet that they create. This is part of the Arai "culture", honed over those three generations. 

It is part of who they are, too. Every Arai helmet must go through three separate quality-control departments: one after the shell is made; one after painting and graphic completion; and one after assembly. This attention to detail is not performed on every hundredth helmet, or every tenth one, but on every single Arai helmet. It can take up to five years for an employee to earn the right to create an Arai Motorcycle Helmet shell. Each shell can take up to 27 steps and over 20 hours to complete the Arai Helmet. Each step must be to the best of their ability, whether it is being made for a Formula-1 or NASCAR® driver, a commuter rider, a MotoGP racer or an off road rider. It is not easy to build an Arai helmet and even after 50 years, there are still no shortcuts. That is something Mr. Arai makes his employees think about. Chantel Guillory (Corona ) I absolutely love my Team Merc jacket but I'm certain that mine was used. I had to hand wash it before I took it out to ride in. Other than that, no complaints here. Only had them for a short period of time so I can't attest to how well they hold up over time but they most certainly are not waterproof.

Went on one ride in the rain and my hands were soaked within minutes do not get these if you're expecting them to keep you dry. Jonathan Jones (Humble ) Great jacket, great value For the price you cannot beat this jacket - it will do 99% of what it needs to do. I've been riding with it for almost 2 years now. The ventilation is unreal - literally I wear this thing in July in Houston and as long as I'm moving it's all good. It is very durable and I've had no problems with zippers, stitching, etc. The liner keeps me warm although I will say on cold cold days I wish it had a "flap" on the inside liner over the zipper because it does feel like some air leaks through that could be prevented. It's nothing a light wind breaker cant fix and I'm talking about days lower than 40F so not too many in H-town. The armor seems very durable. The only thing I wish it had is some plastic on the elbows and some frontal armor over the upper chest just for a little extra protection in case of a crash.

It's a great fit also - I'm short - 5'4" with stockier build but not overweight (140 lb) and my small jacket fits me like a glove. A bit more peace of mind I threw this behind my pre-existing pad in my Icon Contra, and threw another one in my Fly Terra Trek 4 as well. A couple test bumps against a door frame with the Contra foam and d30 combined gave me a lot more confidence in my gear. It may not be too great on its own in my Terra Trek 4, but something is better than the cardboard equivalent they installed in the factory. Also for 25 bucks a pop, it was hard to pass up. Derrick Washington (Valdosta ) Good helmet could be better though This is a good helmet, however it does fit small I bought a medium first and couldn't put it on my head. After returning the Med I bought a large and added my Sena SMH10R and haven't had any issues. The airflow is great but when you get to highway speeds the wind noise becomes annoying. Another plus of this helmet is it comes with a tented screen and it's easy to switch with the clear one.
