Two survivors of Newcastle ’s long-forgotten Dene Cycle Company Limited, which started making bikes in the late 1800s, are set to draw crowds to the city landmark. They will be joined there by around 100 other motorbikes in an eye-catching ride-out - and other interested bikers can also apply to join the fun to help promote a new exhibition. Newcastle’s Motorcycling Pioneers, opening at Discovery Museum that same day, will revive the story of the local company which was innovative in its day.

At a time manufacturers such as Enfield, BSA and Norton were making the earliest motorbikes, the little-known Jesmond and Dene motorcycle models were also on the market. The ambitious company behind them began with forward-thinking 21-year-old J.R. Moore, a bicycle-maker who in 1891 was working from a shop off Northumberland Street.

By 1906 the now-named Dene Cycle Company Ltd was based in St Thomas Street, Newcastle, and was busy developing and producing an innovative and distinctive chain-driven motorcycle which differed from that of other manufacturers of the day who were using a leather belt drive.

Its high-profile launch will see the two Dene motorcycles - which are on loan from Beamish Museum in County Durham - ride across the bridge at 9.30am, followed by a procession of around 100 motorcyclists from local bike clubs. The best viewing spots for the public to see them make their way are expected to be the pedestrian footpaths on the Tyne Bridge and at the Swan House 55° North roundabout. The Dene motorcycles will continue on to Discovery Museum while the rest of the cavalcade will take a longer, alternative route via the A167 central motorway to the Cowhill intersection; arriving at the museum from Barrack Road and St James’ Boulevard. The day’s celebrations will then continue with events and live music on the museum’s new plaza. The vintage bikes are to form part of Newcastle’s Motorcycling Pioneers which will be a small display including a case of early 20th century motorcycle parts and early photographs. It will run at the museum until September 19 with an accompanying programme of events including free talks on the life of J.R. Moore.

Its manager, Carolyn Ball, said: “Discovery Museum celebrates many of Tyneside’s great inventions. “From Charles Parson’s Turbinia to Joseph Swan’s light bulb, we are extremely proud of our region’s heritage as creative innovators. “Through this small display, we are delighted to be able to share the exciting story of Newcastle’s motorcycling heritage with our visitors and neighbours in the motorcycling community on Westgate Road.” Any motorcyle riders interested in taking part in the parade themselves should visit The Dene Motorcycle Ride Facebook event page.Kott YamahaYamaha XsDucatiGarage RemodellingArtcraft GarageMotorbike WorkshopsMotorcycles HeyGarage MotosMotorcycle GaragesForwardKott Motorcycles, Hey no fair his garage and bike look better than mine.....
