In addition to the old oily iron, Joe has curated and will be showcasing a large collection of old motorcycle photos from the city’s past, and I will be set up talking Georgia Motorcycle History with a special look into the lost history of the Chattanooga Motordrome.

One of twenty-two circular wooden motordromes in the American circuit, the track at Chattanooga has spent the last 100 years with an asterisks by its printed name as little to nothing is known about it. As of today, a total of nine articles from the local paper are all that have been discovered detailing the life and times of the Chattanooga Motordrome, the only other track built outside of Atlanta in Jack Prince’s proposed Southern Motordrome Circuit. Seemingly open for only a handful of weeks in the late fall of 1913, the stands of the Chattanooga Motordrome were filled with enthusiastic crowds as some of the nations biggest racing stars hurled themselves around the steeply banked strips of roughly hewn timber. Hopefully more will be uncovered in the days to come, but I am happy to present all that I have discovered thus far tomorrow night so come find us, drink our beer, talk some shit, and hang somewhere on MLK starting around 5pm. Of the dozen or so track stars who whirled around the Chattanooga Motordrome, none was more successful according to reports than the lightning crack from Waco, Wilmer Richards.

Tex, as he was known among friends was a top competitor during the golden age of the American motordrome and one of the few to survive the horrifying spectacle of shooting up the track and out of a stadium all together, landing with a cringe-worthy thud like he did outside of the Houston Drome in the Spring of 1914. Here is Wilmer “Tex” Richards, star of the Chattanooga Motordrome inside the Houston bowl during the 1912 season.
